"The most documented 1970 Pace Car in existence"- The Pace Car Registry

Hi, and thanks for looking at Pace Car #76. This is the most documented pace car in history, now with that being said, it also is the car with the best pedigree, and the changes this particular car made to the Indianapolis 500, for years to come, surround this car.

The car was delivered to Indianapolis in May, 1970 destined as Festival Car #76, and was earmarked for "Winston Churchill"...Indianapolis Chief of Police...no, not theBritish Prime Minister, but The Chief of Police. The abridged version of the story is that Churchill, (who was later investigated by the FBI and and fired from the City ofIndianapolis, for corruption, extortion, and a myriad of other vices) was in charge of the Indianapolis race,de-facto, because he was the Chief of Police.

Pace Car #76 was the last Pace Car picked up for the race, and Churchill looked at the car and walked away...he wanted a 442 in lieu of a Cutlass. So, the car went to Rice Oldsmobile and got all the "442" stuff...including bumper, grills, emblems, etc. and was delivered back to Churchill...in a slight of hand.

The car went on to make over 100 laps at Indy, the day before the race. It drove everyonefrom movie stars to Spiro Agnew, the Vice President of the United States...on ahonoraryride in the race. Aside from that, it was Festival Car #76 in the race.

This car was photographed more than any other Y74 at the race.

After the race, Churchill came up with a "deal" to buy the car through Rice Oldsmobile in Indianapolis through his friend and "Night-Club Owner" A.T. "Lexy" Demetroff.

The car was stored in a heated and air conditioned garage most of its' life, and was never a rusty car.

About 10 years ago they car was cosmetically and mechanically restored to "as new" condition. Meaning anything that wasn't perfect was made perfect. The A/C is ice cold, the car runs like a dream...and is exactly as delivered to Churchill in 1970.

This car is fully documented...includingthe original:

"Pace Car Driving Instruction Sheet"

"Pace Car Information Packet for car #76"

"Oldsmobile Maintenance Folio"

"IndianaState Inspection for the Race dated 4/2/70"

"Original #76 Pace Car Location Sheet"

"Original Invoice to Demetroff from Rice Oldsmobile

"June 15, 1970 Registration to Winston Churchill"

"1970 Consumer Information Guide"

"1970 Oldsmobile Accessory Card"

"Plastic Oldsmobile POP folderand POP

"1970Oldsmobile New Vehicle Warranty to Demetroff"

"Indiana State Police Accident Envelope" and blank police report" for the race.

"Parking Ticket for the 1970 Race"

"Pace Car #76 Release to Winston Churchill dated 4/6/70"

Many news articles and original photos of the car throughout the years.

In the end, this car is a rock solid turn key car that needs absolutely nothing to drive and enjoy. It impresses at any show...scores exceptionally well...and is just a sweetheart to drive with a fantastic amount of history behind it.
