By the early 1960s, head GM stylist Harley Earl was in the twilight of his career and now, MotoeXotica Classic Cars has one of his designs, a B-body 1961 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Holiday Coupe, commonly known as a Bubbletop!
Dressed in a stunning Twilight Mist paint, which is in excellent condition, this Bubbletop, known as the Violet Rocket, has a unique presence without appearing odd. The car’s lights are in decent condition, taking into account the car’s age. This Olds rolls on brand-new, staggered, Boss Motorsports five-spoke wheels and NobleSport tires, 245/40ZR18 in front and 275/35ZR20 in back. The car’s bumpers are shiny and intact. The car’s body panels are straight, the body had a lowered cruiser stance, the engine bay is tidy and the battery looks new.
Under that hood, the car has a freshly rebuilt 455 CID Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 with a heavy-duty radiator and high-temperature spark plug wire and is mated to a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. The engine features all new pistons, lifters and cam. The heads and block were inspected and machined, at least 500 miles on the engine since rebuild, as stated by the previous owner. The top of the engine has been adorned with a powder coated intake manifold, new Edelbrock 650 carburetor and a trick 1955 Cadillac air cleaner. A new aluminum radiator and electric fan have also been installed along with a new battery, brand new brakes, shocks and new Flowmaster dual exhausts and piping. All chrome parts have been re-chromed, the stainless parts have been polished and in the back is a custom-finished trunk.
Inside, the stunning new violet-and-white custom interior is very distinctive. The two-toned seats, carpet, headliner, dashboard, two-spoke steering wheel and door panels with the original armrests are all in excellent shape. Resting under the dash are three ancillary gauges at the driver’s right knee – amperes, oil pressure and temperature. The car’s mirrors are in good condition and the gearshift lever is fine order. Completing the interior is the factory AM radio.
Competition to this Olds in 1961 included Dodge’s Polara two-door, DeSoto’s Adventurer two-door and Mercury’s Meteor 800 two-door hardtop. Documentation includes registration information, a parts receipt and miscellaneous documents.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 89,324 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
