1993 Mini Classic Mini John Cooper Works
As Per eBay Policy: This is a foreign built vehicle with a foreign VIN number. The chassis number stamped into the vehicle is: SAXXNNAYCBD042757This is a 1993 Rover Mini Cooper 1.3i that was purchased last summer with the help of my buddy Stephan, who's stationed in Osaka, Japan. I was able to hire an exporter to help me legally remove its Japanese “Shaken” and arrange for its shipment to the United States. The vehicle was privately owned previous to my purchase and deregistration. It started its life as a Japanese dealer import and received a whole host of dealer installed options. The dealer installed air conditioning, undercoating, red carpets, leather interior, leather steering wheel, brake rotors, foglights, CD changer and "Works" decals. The Mini was first sold and registered in January 1993” meaning I could use that date to import the car legally under USA's 25 year exemption in January 2018. The odometer read 26,811 kilometers and the Japanese registration history confirms it. The car has service history records for its entire life and 18 months left at its time of purchase of its 24 month “Shaken” which is the Japanese nickname for its Inspection and road worthiness test. The car was involved in a recent "Accident" which is the reason why I was able to purchase it with such a recent Shaken. Fear not, the Japanese have extremely low tolerance for vehicle imperfections, especially, classic vehicle imperfections and its accident consisted of some scratches on the passenger side (see gallery pictures) and some touch up paint. No dent, just scratches. It looks like somebody ran into a stone mailbox and made five or six 8" long scratches. Seven month's later, It's here in the USA, fully legal, having completed a 2000+km cross country American road trip, with all taxes paid and a brand new American title. Once the car arrived in Ohio it got a fresh set of DOT approved tires, an alignment, Ohio license plates and is now offered for sale to you.
The Mini comes with its Original Customs paperwork that includes its EPA and Crash Safety exemptions. It also comes with its Japanese service history manual and Rover owners manual. The business card, I'm assuming, is the salesman's. The car was exported with 27000 km (16,777 miles) to me which is the number that Columbus put on the title. The car currently has 30,300 km.

The Mini arrived to pier 10 in Galveston Texas on January 9th and was processed and released from Customs on January 15th. I paid my bill and picked up the car from port on January 18th. Here is how the car looked when it arrived in the USA.
After unpacking
InteriorThis is the most complete and best condition interior of any car I've imported. It has red Cooper Works carpeting and leather and cloth sports seats with red piping. It has a very thick leather wrapped steering wheel and most importantly (Trust Me!) the turn signals are operated with the same hand (Left) that you use to operate your turn signals. The Odometer currently reads 29,800km and all its Japanese records show it to be the original odometer. The Ohio Title reads 16,777 miles (27,000km) DMV chose that number not me, with the odometer grade of "Actual" The car has an aftermarket R134a Air Conditioner with its own controls and the factory hvac controls the heat. The system only needed a recharge and now blows ice freezing cold. The Car has an aftermarket radio and CD changer that appears to have been installed by the Mini dealer as the receipt is in the Mini Service Manual. The speakers sound good, plenty loud, for the small car which is unusually quiet. The Mini uses an older style hard plastic sound deaden-er along with padded carpet and this plus the car's undercoating create a very quiet interior experience. The windows don't "howl" they seal very nice. The doors close and seal nice. The tires don't emit much road noise. Its very quiet inside. The back seat fits two adults. More comfortably, in fact, than my BMW M3. Headliner is in good shape, its not sagging or stained. I haven't located ANY cigarette burns and the ashtray does look clean, not just "cleaned out.”
DocumentationThe Mini had an Owner's Manual and Service History Book in addition to a current "Shaken" Shaken is the nickname given to Japan's 24 month roadworthy inspection and registration process. I purchased the car in September 2017 and the last Shaken date was February 2017. The car was currently able to legally drive the roads of Japan, all it wanted, until February 28th 2019 until I de-registered it from the Japanese system and traded its Japanese plates for shiny new Ohio plates. Unfortunately, my Japanese reading knowledge consist of only "Foreign Loan Words" and my Japanese professor is not able to assist me with translating the Owners Manual or any of the service history. It's not just one or two pages so I understand why she declined to do me a HUGE favor. There is more material here than I can include.
MechanicalLucky for me, and you, the Mini is in perfect shape. It wouldn't have passed its Shaken if it wasn't. There are a few companies that stock parts for the MIni in the USA and can order any part they don't stock. The oil filter can be found at any part store using a 1974 MGB 1275cc to trick the employee into handing you the right filter. Napa pn: 1374 I like to use Valvoline VR-1 20w50 the best but any high zinc oil will do.
Road TripMy trip home consisted of 1312 miles, 2112km, and would start from my Grandparents house in Georgetown Texas and end in my driveway in Columbus Ohio. I would travel through Dallas, Texarkana, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati and Columbus. The car ran perfect the entire way. It was 100% legally exported from Japan, 100% legally imported into the USA and 100% legally registered in the State of Ohio. It was declared under "exemption 1" the 25 year clause, as it became eligible for importation in January 2018. This Mini has been granted an exemption from Federal crash safety standards and EPA emissions standards in 48 states. I have copies of all the paperwork I used and received from importing and legalizing the vehicle. It will be provided to the new owner along with all the other documentation. It wears brand new (100 miles old max) US DOT road legal tires that were mounted, balanced and aligned by NTB. The Ohio BMV has copies of all import paperwork and is scanned into the BMV database.
