Car description

1966 MG MGB Roadster

In light of ever increasing competition from Japanese automakers MG ad men devised a commercial where an MGB would be dropped from a plane at 2000 feet, parachute would open, and a stunt driver would parachute down next to it, and upon both safely landing, the stunt driver would get into the MG, turn the key and drive off, just in front of oncoming Datsun, Fiat, and Porsche with ad copy saying MG a jump ahead of the competition! It worked...

For consignment, a fully restored in 1997, and holding up well, this '66 version of the MGB presents very nicely. A quick starter, and smooth runner, it also has good looks, and is an all straight car with British flair, bloody well right!

Exterior
From its low-slung bonnet, towards the very clean MG badged grille, and paired curved bumper with pushers, chrome bezeled headlights, belt line chromed spear, new beige canvas top, and small but simple boot, this car is all straight and the black paint is very nicely done. Britework, and correct badging are pristine as well. Multi spoked sports mag wheels with faux knockoff spindles in the center are sporting all 4 corners.

Interior
A nicely preserved beige leather covered interior with leather buckets in tuck and roll pattern with smooth bolsters, door panels which are tight and straight, and beige matching carpet, the interior is near showroom on this 54 year-old example of the MGB. A very clean dash with no cracking or errors sits behind an original restored steering wheel. The 4-speed shifter is seen on the hump, and a switch for overdrive is within the dash. Smith's gauges abound as well as the array of control toggles. A note, the plastic in the top is like new with very clear appearance, and no fading.

Drivetrain
A 110ci 4-cylinder fed by dual SU HS4 carburetors, is attached to a 4-speed manual transmission with electronically activated Laycock-De-Normanville overdrive and on the rear is a 3.90 geared axle. All well restored here and all spit spot!

Undercarriage
Very sturdy with minor areas of surface rust, but well done in the 1997 restoration. Frame is solid and rust free. Noted are front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Suspension comes in the form of independent coil spring in the front and leaf springs for the rear. A stock style single exhaust snakes it way to the back to expel spent fossils.

Drive-Ability
I donned my driving hat, goggles, and scarf and off to the Classic Auto Mall test track I went. My cohort always lets me wheel the British cars as I have a soft spot for them....it takes me back to my high school and college day, but I digress... The car started easily with the twist of the key and off I went. The wind rushing through my hair, i felt as if i was touring the countryside outside of the East Sussex. Great acceleration, bias free braking and wonderful handling. This MG took everything I could throw at it on my drive and did it with perfect British charm and manners. Now, to find a way to sneak this car home without my wife finding out.

A classic British sports car convertible, where you can hop in turn the key and be off for a tool with not a care in the world. This heated garage kept car, was well maintained, and painstakingly restored to emulate the original as closely as possible without sacrificing any safety concerns. With that I'll say, "chip chip cheerio and all that rot!"
