1972 MGB Roadster- GHN5UC281613G- A very nice, original and unique restoration candidate.
This is a two owner car that came to us as part of a package deal on another car. It has low mileage (79,838) but has sat idle in dry storage since 1988 (32 years). The engine is “by God†stuck and will require a proper rebuild. The oil on the dipstick is relatively clean for being over 20 years old. The gearbox is the original 4-speed unit.

While there isn’t much paperwork with the car, it does come with a couple of items that easy help us track its existence. The clear South Carolina title is dated 8/24/10 and that is when the second owner took possession. The original owner was from North Carolina as indicated by the rare warranty redemption plate that was actually found in the boot (see pictures). This warranty plate not only bears all the car’s information, but that of the original buyer as well.
The overall condition of the car is very good and very original (No crashes, wiring and electrical components completely intact, etc). As one can see in the pictures, the car would benefit from the replacement of the floors and the RF lower fender panel. Other than that the sills, along with everything else, are very solid.
A neat oddity is that the outline of the original key, which in those days came screwed to the right front inner fender well, can still be seen. In addition, the presence of two six-volt batteries is a rare sight these days as they eventually almost all got replaced by a single 12-volt unit (see pictures). The wiring harness is unmolested and in very good condition.
The original Triplex windshield has no cracks and very little pitting. The side windows are in very good condition and roll up and down easily. The doors open and close with ease and latch very nicely. The boot lid fits very well and has NOT suffered the usual crease at the prop that so many careless people inflict on these cars. The bonnet is nice and straight but is loosely fitted for the time being.
The interior, including the door panels, would actually clean up very well but there are a couple splits in the original seats. The dash has a coverlay on it that looks like it bulges up, but as you can see in the pics it easily pushed down and needs simply to be re-affixed.
A couple of very special things about this car. It was originally a one-year only color, the unique and beautiful Aqua (Turquoise), which was only used on MGBs in 1972 (It has been resprayed once, hence the current Maroon) . In the photos is a picture of what this car would look like properly finished. All pollution equipment is still installed on the car, another testament to the original low miles. 1972 was also the first year of the center vent dash and saw the end of the often maligned “Abingdon pillow†dash. The original hardtop needs restoring but is very straight and quite usable. It will need all the rubbers replaced, a new rear glass and new quarter glass (Plexiglass).
The car comes with everything you see in the pictures plus the obligatory box of spare parts. The car does come with a spare wheel (not present in the pics). The winning bidder will receive a clean, transferable South Carolina title and a Bill of Sale.
