Car description

1971 MG MGB MK II

The MGB is built to a simple, sensible formula and with simple, sensible technology, even for its time: The two-seater body, designed from the ground up as a no-roof roadster (not chopped-down from a contemporary sedan, such as the Morris Minor convertible) features quite deep and wide sills for good length-ways and twisting stiffness and during design, there was attention paid to the 1960s' emerging technology of crash safety too, with an energy absorbing crush zones designed into the nose of the car.

Consigner states a fully restored, numbers matching 71 MGB with a respray, a rebuilt engine, and a shiny black vinyl interior. This rag topped sports car is appearing as close to the 1971 car that sat in the British Leyland showroom, with careful attention paint to period correctness.

Exterior
With gaps well minded and steel straight with no rust we see the exterior bathed in a respray of Flame Red, the paint is nicely done. However, we do notice that the passenger's front fender below the belt line appears to be a shade darker than the rest of the body. A few faults on the lower door panels and rockers where some sanding and swirl marks can be noted. Chrome is mirror like and shows no pitting, badging is all buttoned up, and a new windshield has been recently installed. The convertible top is like new (and it is) and moves up and down manually with ease and has a clear back trio of windows. New Vredestein tires with a matching spare wrap 14-inch MG standard wheels. LED headlights have been added.

Interior
A fully restored black vinyl interior can be seen even better with the top down. Tuck and roll vented vinyl inserts are surrounded by clean mar free smooth black bolsters covering the dual buckets. The hump races through these seats and sports a fire extinguisher (a good thing with Lucas electrics!), and mini MG badged wood turned gearshift knob. Black padded vinyl in excellent condition forms an elongated oval in front of the steering wheel and houses the gauge cluster right in the drivers sight line. A like new steering wheel fronts the dash and is of original form. A rare working British Leyland radio is imbedded here also as well as the essential chromed ashtray. Nice black carpet floods the floors and has MG embroidered floor mats above.

Drivetrain
A pop of the bonnet and you'll be amazed at how great everything is buttoned up and visually appealing. The 1798cc 4 banger has been completely restored, and has a deep maroon valve cover and engine block. Being fed from the side, the mini mill has dual 1-barrel carbs in the form of SU HS4's and a numbers matching 4-speed manual transmission on back. Careful attention has been paid to all details such as correct lines, cables, coil, hoses right down to the decals. The work was performed by Proper Noise Restoration hailing from Reading, Pennsylvania.

Undercarriage
Very clean, rust free and structurally sound it's simply a lot of nicely painted black surfaces. Independent coil springs up front and leaf springs are the on the rear and provide the handling ride. Disc brakes are on front, and drums on the rear.

Drive-Ability
Climbing into the showroom interior it started right up and idled smoothly. After a brief warm up I left the clutch out and enjoyed my cruise around the Classic Auto Mall Test track (a well-kept secret as to its actual location). It runs great, handles nicely, and has an upscale feel with the padding, and all being just right.

The goal was to bring this car up to award winning snuff, and I'd say accomplished. A fully working example ready to be scooped up and driven immediately, we are all spit spot. I say old chap, let's take a tool through the Dandenongs mate!
