1953 MG TD Roadster
In the early 1950's MG decided to go after the American market and did so with full on assault of the MD TD. With its rag top, more powerful engine, shorter in length, and sports car handling, one could drive like Sterling Moss, and not get a speeding ticket! Now there is definitely something to be said for that!
For consignment an older restoration MG TD Roadster. All there and running, it may need a full mechanical inspection for brakes, and all the essentials, but overall it is in fine condition. Sold on a Bill of Sale only.
Exterior
Bathed in white, the steel panels show no rust, some dents and dings, some scratches and chips. But it has a wonderful overall patina that evokes an older British sports car. From the long side lift cowling bonnet, that is fronted by the tall radiator grille, and flanked by the two large round headlights just hanging off the sides, it's all English design. Chrome is a bit faded and has minor pitting. A low door on each side allows those smaller in stature to enter the car, and this compartment is backed up by a slab gas tank mounted on an angle on the rear, with a spare tire attached. Speaking of wheels, the original and more common steel MG wheels are attached. These are showing in black and are topped by small moon style MG logo emblazoned wheel covers. A very nice condition canvas top in matching white is atop and lowers and raises fairly smoothly.
Interior
Two dark tan leather? buckets, walnut eyebrow dash, fronted by a bakelite 3 spoke banjo style steering wheel, and black carpet flooding the floors, this pretty much sums up the interior. Somewhat patina glass covers original gauges, and dash shows some wear, but maintains its shine and grain depth. The central mounted dash area is strategically placed there so the change over from LHD to RHD is made easier in the manufacturing process. This car is obviously a LHD for the Americas.
Drivetrain
A flip of the cowling and we are met with what to my wondering eyes appears a fully restored engine. In blazing red block, and all its chromed and silver painted glory, the 1250 CC 4-cylinder motor runs, but is noted to have a fuel leak on one of the carburetors. It has a manual transmission attached to the rear of the engine.
Undercarriage
Pretty much pristine with its Ash wood undercarriage intermixed with straight black steel, virtually no rust is seen throughout. Ash is is good condition, as are rockers and side running boards.
A fairly nice example of a 1953 MG TD, all dressed up and ready to go. Not perfect, but certainly drivable, and with a full mechanical inspection... actually safe! Flip that top down, fire up the 4 popper, we are going for an old fashioned tool in the countryside, move over Sterling Moss!
