Car description

Up for auction is a 1950 Mercury Sport Sedan. We have owned this car for 9 years and have had a lot of fun in it. It's a survivor type original car that I got from the 2nd owner. It has the original interior and has had one acrylic lacquer repaint about 35 years ago. It's a great driver and as reliable a flathead car as you will find and is still 6 volts. I have done a lot to it over the years to accomplish this.ExteriorNice straight body with good hood, oor and trunk gaps. No signs of ever being in a wreck. Doors close and latch like new and don't sag. Hood and trunk open and close as they should with no issues. Visor was on it when I purchased it but I have taken it on and off a few times over the years and run it both ways with or without. Car was originally Laguna Blue and was painted the metallic Grey about 35 years ago. It was painted in acrylic lacquer and I still have a half quart of the original paint that is still good. The paint shows well and really looks good when polished out. It has it's share of small nicks and chips on the door edges, tc. many of which have been touched up, ut no major issues with the paint. The firewall is still Laguna Blue and has the original yellow chalk marks behind the fuel pump. Stainless trim is nice with a few dings and scuffs. Chrome on most of the car is original and has it's share of weathering, cuff and pitting. I had the grille center and parking light housings rechomed several years ago. They are excellent. The door handles have the accessory stainless gaurds. Glass is original. I replaced the door seals, runk seal and hood bumpers with quality parts from Dennis Carpenter. The seals fit excellent. Door and trunk locks work and the car has the original keys. Floors are solid with only a few minor issues at the gas pedal and the spare tire well. Front lower cowl on both sides are showing some slight bubbling and the rockers look to have had some work over the years. Drivetrain and ChassisI had the engine rebuilt when I purchased the car. It has all the correct Mercury parts with a stock 4" crank and .060" pistons. It has a 3/4 cam and adjustable lifters. The stock 8CM heads were shaved to up compression slightly. The original water pumps, arburetor, enerator and starter were rebuilt at that time. The engine starts easily, uns great and has a little lope at idle from the cam. It has ceramic coated black Fenton headers and dual exhaust. The dual exhaust was on the car when I purchased it, just had new extensions made to the headers. I also had the radiator cleaned and rodded. The car is an original 3 speed overdrive car and the overdrive works great. A rebuilt pressure plate and clutch disc were installed at the time the motor was built. I have never rebuilt the transmission but it shifts smooth and has no issues. I usually leave the overdrive engaged, ut the cable works fine. The column shifter is nice and tight and not sloppy. The rear end is stock and I replaced the pinion seal a few years ago. The steering box has been adjusted and lubed and feels good. The steering wheel is centered when driving and there is average play in the wheel and nothing excessive. All the brakes were gone through when I purchased it including all new steel lines, oses, hoes and wheel cylinders. I had the original master cylinder rebuilt with a stainless sleeve. I replaced the front shoes a few years ago. The brakes work great as does the parking brake. The entire fuel system was gone through as well by having the tank vatted and cleaned and installing all new steel line and hose. I added a fuel filter at the tank. The car is still 6 volts and has the original wiring. That said, t is one of the most reliable old cars I've had. I can let it sit for a month, nd it will crank as easy as other old 12 volt cars I have. The automatic choke on the carburetor works great. The car has been lowered all around by using new Posies springs and lowering blocks in the rear and lower coil springs in the front and then the car was realigned. The tires are 7.60 x 15 BF GoodRich and are about 2 years old with almost new tread. Hubcaps and trim rings are original.InteriorThe interior is 100% original including the seat, ats, oor panels, ear package tray and headliner. It's all in surprisingly good condition but the drivers seat is worse for the wear, ut I have just thrown a blanket over it. It has an old aftermarket rubber floor mat over the original front mat. The headliner is completely intact with some minor staining. Dash chrome and plastic is nice and above average. It has the accessory parking brake warning light mounted on the lower dash that works. All the gauges and dash lights work as they should. The blinkers, eadlights, aillights and brake lights work. The horn works. The interior dome light and lower dash courtesy lights work. The glove box liner is original and nice and the glove box light works. The heater and blower motor works. The radio and the clock are not currently working. I had the vacuum wiper motor rebuilt several years ago and it works great. I installed 3 seat belts in the rear for now, ut have an extra belt still in the box to have it where two belts could be in the front and two in the back. Comes with the original owners manual. Interior door handles, ocks, indow regulators and vent windows work fine. It's not a perfect car, ut it's got a neat survivor patina look and has a reliability that is rare in an original car. I have three young boys and we've hauled them all over in this and had a lot of fun with it. It truly is a "drive it anywhere" type of car. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere with the right tools and parts in the trunk because it is an old car and you never know but it's ready to drive. Please email any questions.
