Iconic Merc! 350 V8, Auto, A/C, Pwr Strg/Brks, Great Paint w/ Ghost Flames, Wow!

Sometimes you just have to drive slow. No, it's not because you're on the verge of losing your license or you're stuck behind a funeral. No, sometimes you need to drive slow...to be seen. You'll need the right car, and this 1951 Mercury Deluxe Lead Slead is just what the doctor ordered. Dropped and chopped it's got a wicked stance, and when coupled with the bright chrome and the wide-white tires, the curb appeal of this black beauty is off the charts. Take a look at the pics and imagine yourself in the sloooow lane!

All the traditional body mods can be found on this Merc, it's been shaved, decked, nosed, and frenched for just the right look, and all the work was expertly done. Built a few years ago, it has obviously spent most of its life in protected, heated storage, so it still looks fresh and the sleek lines of the Merc coupe will never go out of style. Although it's certainly modified, it hasn't been excessively chopped, so it looks right, the doors fit well, and you won't bang your head on the roof every time you climb in. The front grille is from a DeSoto, which is a popular and traditional modification on the Mercurys, and all the chrome was refinished to a high level when the car was built and still shows great today. That sinister black paint is miles deep and has a great shine, and even though it isn't a perfect trailer queen, anyone would be proud to show off this finish. Especially when you consider the look of the ghost flames incorporated into the hood, and the downright art show that was expertly air brushed on the deck lid. Very impressive. The taillights have been frenched on each side of the rear fenders, another classic Lead Slead trick, and the windows are nicely tinted for an ultra-cool look. Trust us, this Merc looks as good in person as it does in our pics, and we're proud to showcase it.

While a lot of chopped Mercs are about as pleasant to drive as an armored truck with gunslits for windows, this one is bright and comfortable inside. The bench seats have been upholstered with a burgundy velour similar to what you'd find in an '80s Caddy, which wears like iron and is comfortable in both warm and cool weather, making it the ideal choice. The matching door panels are just as plush, and the thick-pile carpets below match as well and help insulate the cabin from heat and noise. That dash is stock and has been painted to fully match the interior, offering an array of stock instruments, switches, and ornate metal bezels that provide nice contrast against all the burgundy inside. Those simple factory gauges are augmented by a set of aftermarket digital units under the dash, along with a panel that houses vents for the modern R134a A/C system that blows nice and cold. The original AM/FM radio is still in place in the factory slot, although it likely stopped working long ago and is ready for an upgrade. A leather wrapped billet steering wheel reminds the driver that this is a custom sled after all, and it's mounted atop a tilt column for further room for the driver. There's also plenty of room in the trunk, which offers matching burgundy carpets, a custom cover on the full-sized spare, and a relocated battery that frees up room in the engine bay.

Under the hood is the rodder's favorite-a small block Chevy. 350 cubic inches moves you around with power to spare, thanks to a four-barrel carb, an aluminum intake and an HEI ignition. Finned aluminum valve covers and a Cadillac/Oldsmobile retro-style air cleaner with ghost flames are reminders of the paint scheme outside, as is that custom radiator cover, and shows all onlookers that this car doesn't take itself too seriously. This Merc is here to have some fun. Underneath, a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission backs the mill, sending power back to a GM 12-bolt. Exhaust travels through dual pipes and old school glasspack mufflers that sound nice and mean. Power brakes brings the big lug to a smooth stop, and power steering ensures better handling and easy cruising (remember, we're going slooooow!). Last, and arguably greatest, are the big 225/70/15 BFGoodrich wide whites wrapped around bright chrome smoothie wheels. You almost can't imagine the car without them!
