Located in PORTLAND, OREGON.
This "M" code Cougar was special-ordered from Jim Fugate Ford in Enumclaw, Washigton (near Seattle.) Delivered December 30, 1968 with 351 cubic inch, 290 horsepower V8, close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes and 3.00:1 rear axle ratio.
It is one of only 142 Cougars made with the 351/4-speed combination, making it quite rare today.
While the original owner is unknown, in 2001 it was acquired by the third owner in Hillsboro, Oregon, who set out on a multi-year restoration beginning in 2002. The car was stripped to bare metal and galvanized steel used to repair any questionable panels. A color change was made from the original Burnt Orange to a special code WT9083 purple paint that was originally used on a limited run of 98 1969 Cougars produced as a promotion for the Rocky Mountain Insurance Company in Calgary, Canada. (The color is very similar to Dodge's "Plum Crazy".)
While the engine was rebuilt just prior to the 2001 purchase, over the next 16 years, the car was further refined by replacing the power steering pump, alternator, brake master cylinder and adding an engine dressup kit with chromed air cleaner and valve covers. Additionally, the front-end was rebuilt with poly-graphite bushings, new front coil springs, control arms and tie rod ends. KYB shocks were fitted all around, and new rear leaf springs and shackles. A competition brace was added between the front shock towers. The radiator and heater core were rebuilt and a Flowmaster dual exhaust was installed, along with a new gas tank. The gearbox was completely rebuilt with a new clutch and the differential was rebuilt. Also added were new front and rear bumpers, grille, wheel trim rings and caps, new black vinyl top and interior, plus other trim items.
After being acquired by the fourth owner in Portland last year, most recently in May, 2018, new white letter radial tires were fitted. Also an 8,000 rpm Eliminator tach was installed along with a new speedometer, correct-appearing modern AM/FM stereo, new clock and a polished alloy Cougar sport steering wheel.
As seen in the photos, this Cougar presents well. It has a straight body, good glass, very good paint, and excellent vinyl top and interior that show no wear. It runs, drives, shifts and stops well. Along with the extensive records of the work done over the years, this Cougar is accompanied by a full set of five 1969 manuals, the owner's handbook, the original assembly line tag, selected original advertising brochures, magazine articles and a Marti Report.
A reasonable reserve has been placed on this car, WELL BELOW the cost of restoration. The only reason for selling is to make room in the garage.
