Car description |
---|
This Park Lane was one of the very first 1964 Mercurys built, (assembled at the St. Louis Hazelwood plant on September 6th, 1963). Ultimately this 2 door breezeway hardtop series would end up being the rarest full size 1964 Mercury built, with only 1786 units, and only a handful with the ultra rare sports interior featuring a console and bucket seats. With a unique roof line and rear power window, 390 4 bbl engine, automatic transmission, and such options as side power windows and drivers seat, this was not your average Mercury. It was shipped to Johnny Haas Lincoln Mercury in Lakewood, Co, where it almost certainly sat on the showroom floor before being purchased by a lady that would own it for more than 34 years. The Mercury was apparently retired after she got a little too close to something, creasing the right front fender sometime in 1984. In 1998 I purchased it from the original owner's son, who told me that it was always garaged until he had recently lost storage, (and was selling for that reason). He claimed that the 63,000 odometer reading was accurate. The condition of the car gives me no reason to doubt his claim, but there is no documentation to prove it. I drove the Mercury to my home, then changed the oil, drained the gas tank, and stored it in the corner of my shop for the next 20 years. My intention was to some day return it to it's former glory. But alas, besides occasionally starting it with fresh gas from a remote tank, I have not driven it or done anything with it since 1998. And although I have not started it recently, the engine cranks when I bump the ignition switch. The interior and exterior lights and accessories work, although the power seat and two side windows are intermittent. The breezeway rear window glides up and down perfectly. Again, the engin, transmission, and brakes are untested over the past two decades, and it has no battery. The tires are ancient and mismatched, but don't lose air. Aside from the obvious right front fender damage, some minor dents, dings and scrapes, the car is amazingly original and unmolested, even retaining most of it's original L-code Bittersweet paint. (The roof is so nice that it would be a shame to repaint, even in the event of a full restoration). The glass is intact and not pitted. The original spinner wheel covers still grace the car, and the stainless trim is overall very presentable. All of the interior and exterior potmetal chrome is beautiful and pit-free. The grille is dented, and the hood ornament and antenna are long gone. Bumpers are good driver quality. The hard to find aluminum rear tail lamp panel is very nice. The body is amazingly rust free, and the frame, floorpan, wheel houses, rocker panels, inside quarter panels, and trunk pan are dry and solid. The only rust through I can see are the small pin holes in the top middle of the right rear wheel opening, and the left front fender above the grille. The rest of the the dark rusty areas in the right quarter panel are surface only. The interior is overall excellent, with a perfect rear seat and headliner, very nice original cut-pile carpet and door panels. The padded dash is cracked, the front seats need some repair. The metal seat backs each suffered from some screw holes resulting from the owner's unfortunate decision to add some of those awful late 60's aftermarket head rests. Again, all of the interior chrome is beautiful. The ignition and door locks function properly and are still keyed the same. One piece of the passenger side chrome interior door trim is partially loose. Some of the armrests are missing, but I have replacements. The trunk has it's original mat, jack equipment, and a spare tire. I apologize for the lighting quality, cellphone photos, and somewhat dirty and dusty appearance. It has not been cleaned recently, and I have not finessed, detailed, armoralled, or in any way attempted to hide or misrepresent any aspect of this car. What you see is what it is: A "Jewell in the rough" that has been in storage for more than 34 years. (I can't bring myself to say "barn find")! I will include an array of extra parts, including replacement trim, and mechanical and electrical parts, and an owners manual. Title is clear and in-hand. I welcome inspections, and can be reached at 303-654-1255 to answer any of your questions. I am very fond of this unique Mercury, but I am downsizing my collection, and willing to let someone else have it for a great cause. I would never consider parting it out (and I hope you won't either)! Here is your opportunity to bid on an extremely rare Mercury, knowing that 100% of the proceeds will go to help our disabled veterans. $500.00 deposit will be due via Paypal within 24 hours of auction's end, with the balance due within 7 days of auction's close. No warranties expressed or implied, and bidders with low or negative feedback please contact me directly before bidding. I can assist your shipper and help loading provided that you make all of the arrangements. I am also flexible as far as storage prior to transport, with the understanding that if something was to happen to it, it is YOUR car. Thanks for your interest, and bid high to benefit a great cause!
