Car description

1947 Mercury Coupe (Mercury Eight)
Up for your consideration is my '47 Mercury Eight Coupe ... I consider her a trueCaliforniasurvivor. I think you'd be pressed to find another unrestored '47 as solid as this one. Up until last year it spent the previous 30+ years in sunny Palmdale, California. Dry desert in case you haven't been there, the perfect place topreserve an old car. Before that it was in the Los Angeles area. The car has a great history ... owned almost since new by the same person. He was a career LAPD Officer who after retirement went on to work with the Coast Guard. He passed away about a year and a half ago and I purchased the car from his son. The son told me how proud his dad was of the car and how well he took care of it and maintained it. With how original and solid the car is I saw that it wouldn't take much to get the old girl back on the road ...however, plans have changed and I'm in the middle of a house "make over" and addition that will take space, money, and time. Hence, the sale of several toys.
Overall the car is very solid and ready with a little TLC to get back on the road. Somewhere along the line before it was parked 30+ years ago it had one repaint that is now chipping and peeling in a few spots ... primarilyon the roof and the hood. All the trim is there and in good shape with the exception of the drivers side front fender that has a dent. The son mentioned his dad did this when backing the car into the spot where it was to be stored. Needless to say "Dadwasn't happy about that". The upholstery and headliner is brittle from having sat in such a dry climate and will need to be redone or covered. All glass is good except for the passenger side door glass has a hairline crack and there's a small "bb" sized hole in the rear passenger side window. The running boards/rockers aresurprisingly solid and free from any rust rot. That seems to be the first area to go on the old Merc and Ford Coupes.
The engine and enginecompartment are solid and pretty clean as well. I was told the engine ran a couple years ago off an external gas can and that it moves through all gears as it should. The tank probably needs to be removed and cleaned. The wide white tires are in great shape and the hub caps are period correct originalhubcaps (driver quality). There is a couple of minor rust spots in the trunk pan (see picture) that in my opinion would be an easy fix not requiring pan replacement. Anyway, you get the picture. I'm selling it as a non-running project car that with a little work would make someone a great classic. I don't know the condition of the brakes but would assume they need attention. You don't need to break out the torch, patch panels, and floor pans to get this car back in shape. A new paint job, repair one dent, seat covers, and a good thorough tune-up with fresh fluids and you should be rolling again. I have the old schoolCalifornia Certificate of Title in hand (Pink Slip).
