Car description |

This is a spectacular 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom. Simply put, I just don't think that one would have good odds of finding nicer example of a '62 Mercury than this one. This car has 36,850 original miles, it is all original throughout including most of the paint and all of the interior and chrome. I am the second owner and I have owned it since 2005. I purchased the car from the original owner Dale Nelson of Cleona, PA and at the time of my purchase it had 33,201 miles. Dale did not just store this car, he loved it and preserved it. There are nice unrestored cars and then there are mind blowing unrestored cars - this is the latter. Although it has 36,850 miles on it, it looks more like 3600 miles. Its really that good.
The car is equipped with the "Monterey Custom" Interior and exterior package, 352 V8, M-Drive Automatic transmission, power steering, padded dash, tinted windshield, dual outside mirrors and a pair of stainless steel fender skirts the original owner added when the car was new. See the phot of the original invoice showing Dale's purchase from R&J Motors in Lebanon, PA on August 14, 1962 and original owner's manual with Dale's information contained. Dale explained to me that making his decision in the Summer of 1962 between the Monterey Custom and the 62 Oldsmobile Starfire was not easy, but he decided on the Mercury. He wanted Turquoise but they had this pretty beige one on the lot with the two tone paint that was part of the ""Custom" package and he took it home. He kept it until 1973 when it came off the road. It was in super dry storage until my purchase in 2005. See the photo with Dale when I loaded the car up onto my car trailer when I bought it. I cannot imagine how much extra effort he must have expended over the years to keep this car looking so new.
Right after my purchase I did many things that a car that has been sleeping for a long time usually needs. I have receipts for the following work done - 4 new 8.00x14 BFG 1 inch bias ply whitewalls (it still has the original spare), trans service, oil change, new water pump, changed belts and radiator hoses, tune up kit, all four wheel cylinders, all brake hoses, front shoes and master cylinder, cleaned out gas tank with a new float in the sending unit as well as a few other details. Everything and I mean everything on this car works the way you want it to, except the clock. It still retains the original exhaust which is incredible. All else performs the way a low mileage car ought to. Steers straight, starts right, stops right, no flat spots in carb, it is quiet and idles smoothly.
The chrome looks like NOS chrome, no pits ANYWHERE. The front and rear trim on this car is pot metal, not stainless and it looks like they are new. The interior shows almost no wear at all. The chrome on the dash looks new. The super cool "flashlight" tail light lenses look like NOS units as do the housings. The paint is all original with the exception of the right rear quarter that I had to have painted due to some damage that occurred when I owned it while unloading it off my trailer. I was heartbroken. The paintwork was done professionally by a large restoration shop and looks very good. The paint all the way around the car is simply outstanding. No oxidation, no fading. There is a dent in the right hand rocker molding that was there before my purchase. This pretty much looks like a one year old car all the way around. I cannot say enough about how nice this car is.
The car is so good in fact, that it was featured in the book "They Are Only Original Once" by Rich Lentinello, the editor of Hemmings Motor News. See the photo of the pages from this book.
Please feel free to contact me at 201-406-4423. I welcome inspections of the car prior to the end of the auction. I am a private collector and have owned this car for 11 years. I am so confident you will like this car, that if you are the winning bidder and physically and personally come here to pay for it and you are not happy with this car, you do not have to buy it and I will refund your deposit. If you buy the car sight unseen or use a third party inspector to look at it and have it shipped, I cannot offer this option after the car arrives at your location. If you purchase it sight unseen without coming here in person, it is your car and there is no refund available. So you have a clear chance to inspect it right here in person before paying and being committed. I believe that this approach should clearly show my confidence with the condition of this car.
The car is being offered on an AS IS WHERE IS BASIS with no warranties nor guarantees express, written or implied including fitness for a particular purpose. I require a $1000 deposit within 2 business days after the end of the auction, and full payment via bank wire or cash in person within 5 business days after the end of the auction. Any shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time.
Now if you want to purchase what is likely the nicest unrestored 1962 Monterey left, then this is your chance. Please take a look at the over 100 photos I have posted below.
