This very nice Mercury coupe has been collector owned for many years having passed through only a few hands since new. The car sports an amazing original interior, hat really is without flaw, ts one of the nicest original interiors I have seen from this era. The car runs and drives exceptionally well and really needs nothing to be toured immediately. The only real cosmetic flaw on the car is the crack in the grill trim right below the hood release, hich has been repaired. The paint will buff out quite well, here is no cracking or crazing. This car basically just needs a new caretaker. The only reason it is being offered is the current owner's health is failing and he realizes it's time to pass the car onto another collector.

In 1935, dsel Ford designed a more luxurious version of the Ford that he intended to call the Falcon. Since he didn't think it fit in with other Fords, e created a new brand named for the Roman god -- Mercury. The 1939 Mercury 8 began production in 1938, ith a 95-horsepower V8 engine. Over 65,800 sold the first year, t a price of $916. From the very beginning, ercury was a division that seemed to have a brand identity that was constantly in the process of finding its place in the North American automotive market. Sometimes, ercury was presented as a performance division of more mainstay Ford products, hile at other times, t was meant to match sales with Detroit crosstown rivals Buick, ldsmobile and Chrysler during the 1950s through 1980s. Many times, ercury models shared platforms with Ford products, uch as the Mercury Cougar (shared with the Ford Mustang, hunderbird, nd Elite), he Mercury Bobcat (shared with the Ford Pinto), r the Mercury Comet (shared with the Ford Falcon, airlane, nd Maverick). Mercury was its own division at Ford until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division, ith Ford hoping the brand would be known as a "junior Lincoln," rather than an upmarket Ford. In 1949, ercury introduced the first of its "new look," integrated bodies, t the same time that Ford and Lincoln also changed styling radically. Again in 1952, ercury offered a further modernization in its look. In 1958, he Lincoln-Mercury Division and the ill-fated Edsel brand were joined into the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division; with the demise of Edsel in 1960, t has been in the Lincoln-Mercury Division ever since. Mercury, ike the defunct Edsel, as created from scratch, ather than being a takeover of an existing company like Lincoln. Mercury's heyday was in the 1950s, hen its formula of stretching and lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful. The marque has changed several times throughout its history. During the 1940s and 1950s, he make moved between as a "gussied up" Ford, o a "junior Lincoln" and even to having its own body designs. From the late 1950s, hrough the 1960s and early 1970s, ercury began to distance itself from Ford and offered several different looking models such as the Turnpike Cruiser, ark Lane, ougar and Marquis. During Ford Division's "Total Performance" era in the early 1960s, ercury produced some equivalent models, uch as the full-size S-55 and the Marauder, hich shared the same body styles and mechanics as the Ford Galaxie 500/XL sports models. These big Mercurys were somewhat successful in racing.
