Launched at Geneva in 1963, the W 113 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL replaced the 300 SL and 190 SL at once and ushered in a new single-platform sports car policy for its maker. Crisp Paul Bracq-penned bodylines, comprehensive built-in safety features engineered by Bela Barnyi and the optional Pagoda auxiliary hardtop made the new SL an instant classic. Development was overseen by legendary Mercedes-Benz personnel including Techniocal Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. Models progressed from the 230 SL through the briefly produced 2.5-liter 250 SL, which heralded 4-wheel disc brakes, to the ultimate 2.8-liter 280 SL, produced from November 1967 to February 1971. While improvements ushered in by the 280 SL were mainly detail-oriented, they were many and combined to make a great road car even better. The enhanced horsepower output, low-end torque, and all-around driving flexibility of the 280 SL captivated road testers in period and it continues to enchant todays collectors and marque enthusiasts. According to marque experts, 7,935 examples of the 280 SL were produced for 1970, including this handsome example we are pleased to offer.
This exceptionally nice 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL continues to benefit from a bare-metal strip and repaint performed by us at The Last Detail in 2013. Enhancements include selectively replaced chrome brightwork and wood grain interior trim items. Choice upgrades include the desirable and rare Euro headlamps, a handsome Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel, and later-model R107 style alloy wheels. Mileage is currently an approximate 87,300. Desirable amenities include original type air conditioning and weather gear includes a Black canvas convertible top and of course, the iconic Pagoda removable hardtop. The best of the breed to many collectors, the later-production Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is, best of all, one of the most enjoyable postwar classic sports/touring cars to drive, blessed with plenty of power, good handling, and looks that have only grown better with the passage of time.
