1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL Sedan, FL Car, Cold A/C

It’s the king of luxury sedans! If you can remember back to the 1980’s then you might recall how a Mercedes-Benz 500SEL could make a huge impression. They were bigger and more luxurious than just about anything else on the road, and everyone knew it. This 1985 model is not only a great throwback to that era, but is also a good running and driving car with cold a/c and more.
This imposing German sedan spent more than 30 years in Florida which has kept the body and frame free of any rust issues. It also has a clean Autocheck report without any accidents, floods, or other such trauma. The odometer shows 146k miles though it has stopped working. The paint is in remarkable condition for a vehicle of this age. The body is straight and true with even panel gaps throughout. Note the side markers were redone with European style clear lenses and amber bulbs. The factory sunroof works smoothly and has a good seal. There are also Michelin tires all around in very good condition.
The engine is the well regarded 5.0L V8 that has a proven record of reliability. This is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The ride is just what you’d expect from a long wheelbase Mercedes-Benz, meaning smooth and comfortable, while the independent rear suspension contributes to decent handling for such a big car. The suspension, steering, and brakes are all in good condition.
The dark blue leather interior with woodgrain trim is the best you could get in 1985. It still has a clean, classy look all these years later. The leather is in good condition with some cracking visible, primarily in the driver cushion. The rear seating offers more legroom than just about anything short of a limousine! All gauges work except the previously mentioned odometer. The wipers and horn are also functional, as is the aftermarket AM/FM/CD stereo. The factory climate control works as well with cold air conditioning that has been converted to R134a.
There aren’t many cars with the panache of a 500SEL. And there certainly aren’t many in this price range, especially in this condition. It still looks great and offers a very nice ride as well. Just think, for only a few thousand dollars you can own and drive one of the most prestigious cars from the era.
