Car description

  • Attractive Euro-Model R107
  • Only 32,650 Original Miles!
  • 5.0 Litre V8 | 237 HP
  • 4 Speed Automatic Gearbox

The R107 series of the Mercedes-Benz Sl Class was the third generation, being introduced for the 1971 model year. The R107 chassis was the first SL to be offered from the factory with a V8 option, something totally synonymous with the model nowadays. The R107 SL is an elegant grand touring roadster, so the smooth torquey power delivery of a V8 makes a lot of sense. The 500SL was only ever offered in Europe starting in 1980. It is also the most powerful version of the R107 chassis, sporting 237 bhp. Surprisingly the 500SL had more power than the later 560SL, which was a larger displacement engine but plagued by emissions equipment required by United States federal law.

Presented here is a 1984 Model Year R107 500SL Roadster in absolutely beautiful condition. The car only has 32,000 original miles and it has really held up well. The original paintwork is in great shape free of major blemishes or fading. All of the exterior trim is present and in excellent condition as it has obviously been stored inside its whole life. Underneath the car is bone dry and looks to be in very good shape, with all of the major bushings and rubbers still intact. The 5 liter engine fires to life with a turn of the key and idles nice and smooth. The engine pulls very healthy, this is the most power you can get in this chassis! The 4 speed automatic transmission goes into gear easily and shifts smoothly and promptly. The ride is supple and comfortable, and the car does not exhibit any odd noises or rattles, a testament to the great German engineering that went into these automobiles.

The interior is in remarkable shape. The previous owner had generic floor mats covering the factory mats in order to keep them in perfect shape. The leather on the seats is still soft and has not dried out or cracked in any way. The dash pad is in perfect condition with no warpage or cracking which is very common on vehicles of this vintage. Everything in this interior works as expected, from the gauges to the climate control. A low mileage car like this transports you to the era it was built in as you get to feel see and smell everything just as you would have if you bought the car new in 1984. It is a rare treat to find a car in such beautiful original shape and will only become more and more uncommon as these cars become quickly become more collectible.
