Car description

I am proud to present for sale a beautiful classic Mercedes Benz 280SE 3. 5 coupe. I am listing this car for my daughter’s father-in-law Paul. who has owned this car since 1990. Paul has taken very good care of this fine automobile. He had the car serviced and repaired at OC Benz. LLC Costa Mesa CA and Fletcher Jones Motorcars Newport Beach during his 25 year stewardship. Paul has kept records for repairs and maintenance during the period of 2005 to present. The car has a 5 digit odometer so actual mileage is not 100% verifiable but what I could attain from the records I reviewed. Paul drove this car an average of 3300 miles per year. The odometer shows 31. 81 ……. so it may be 131. 81 or 231. 81 miles. I did some non scientific tests around a visual inspection and a door hinge play test and I would guess it to 131. 81 miles. The W111 has the correct matching body plates with the correct vin# W111 026 612002085. The W111 series cars were designed in 1961 by Paul Bracq and first appeared at the Geneva Auto show in 1961. The W111 series was produced by Mercedes for 11 years and is one of the most desirable Mercedes Benz body styles. W111 280SE 3. 5 Coupes and convertibles continue their rapid appreciation and following by classic car collectors worldwide. One very strong point about these cars is they can be shown as a classic and driven on the road at today’s speeds. With the 4 wheel power disc brakes…. they can also be stopped. This car has the optional 4 speed automatic transmission. Another desirable option is the Behr air conditioning system. Here are some of the specifications of this car. It has the 3. 5 (3499CC) 213. 5 Cubic inch V-8 engine that put out 230 horse power (more that 1 hp per cubic inch) at 6500 RPM. It is a cast iron block engine with aluminum heads. SOHC single overhead camshaft with one per cylinder bank. It has the Bosch electronic fuel injection. The car weights 3641 pounds and rides on a 108” wheelbase. Performance is 0-60MPH in 9. 5 seconds and a maximum speed of 127 miles per hour. Theses specifications were impressive for 1971 and this engine became the building block for many later large Mercedes V-8’s engines. Paul acquired the car in 1990 from Bruce Strauss Cars and drove it as his everyday driver until late 2003. He then took the car to Bruce Strauss Cars. Inc in Costa Mesa for a cosmetic restoration. Bruce Strauss removed all of the paint and took the car down to bare metal. He then painted the car in its original Mercedes Benz brown color. He restored /replaced the interior wood trim and the upholstery was replaced with a contract grade Naugahyde vinyl. They did a beautiful job with the cosmetic restoration. Paul has done a nice job of preserving it the over the last 11 years. The cost of the restoration in 1990 was $39. 00. 00. The rear panel under the rear window is still the original leather. Paul had seat belts installed along the way for oblivious safety reasons. The engine is original and has not been rebuilt. I will list some of the repairs that Paul had done in the last 11 years. 2008 Brake Booster. master cylinder. hoses. rotors $1541. 00. 2008 Windshield washer pump $294. 00. 2011 new tires P205/75R-14 $308. 00. 2012 Transmission removal. reseal $1975. 00. 2012 Air conditioning service and springs repair $1500. 00. 2013 Motor mounts replaced. nbsp; 2014 New tinted windshield installed $1200. 00. 2014 replacement of dome light assembly and below dash light assembly. Paul. the owner. lives in Newport Beach and I drove to his house to photograph and inspect the car. The car shows very well with the paint being shiny and bright. The interior looks very nice with some very slight wear to the driver’s seat. The tires have good tread on them. They are 4 years old with about 10. 00 miles on them. The car starts easy and idles at just over 1000 RPM during the warm up period. The car accelerates fine on flat as well as on inclines. The transmission shifts normal for a car this age. No noises of concern from the engine or transmission. The car has some very slight oil leakage. The car has a nice firm heavy feel to it…. solid. I drove it for a few miles and returned to take the photos and was pleased with the performance. This car has the power to move it right on out at your command. The air conditioning works well and blows cold. All of the other features of the car are working. The Becker radio works but was disconnected when the later model Sony stereo and 10 CD system was installed. The CD changer is in the trunk and the radio is installed between the dash and the console and does not interrupt the beautiful lines of the interior. Paul also added some additional new speakers in the back deck and some tweeters in the door pockets. The door panels were not cut. The system was purchased at Reuss Systems in Orange CA and they are still in business. I looked for rust and could not find any present. This car has been garaged since purchased in 1990. The foot pedal which originally operated the wiper washer has been disabled (but is present) and an electric washer with under dash push button switch is in use now. When you turn the signal blinkers on the left turn blinks faster than the right but the blinkers still work fine. The personalized California license plates are not included in the price but could be purchased separately if interested. We did some research to ascertain a current value for the car. The NADA high retail on this car is $59. 00. 00. Recent sales of like 280SE 3. 5 Coupes ranges from $ 61. 00. 00 to $65. 00. 00. We have set the reserve commensurate with the quality and mileage. Pre 1990 provenance is not known. Please look over the photos and ask all questions before bidding. We welcome your inspection or your hired inspector……Please call us to make an appointment. Paul is serious about selling this car…. and you should have your funds ready at hand and have asked for your spouses’ approval before purchasing. Derelict bidders will be reported to eBay. The car is 44 years old and is sold as-in where-is with no warranties expressed or implied. This sale is made in California and is governed by it rules and laws. Paul has a valid California Title in his name. Paul. the owner. is responsible for the description and listing verbiage. I am listing it on his behalf. A $500. 00 nonrefundable deposit needs to be made by Pay Pal within 24 hours of the winning bid. The balance will be paid directly to Paul the owner in cash or certified bank check before the vehicle will be released to the buyer. A cashier’s check requires 7 business days to clear both banks. The car will not be released before the check has cleared. To be fair to ALL bidders the reserve will not be disclosed…………. just bid what you can afford. Good luck and happy bidding! Paul’s car is in the Mercedes Benz “Buyers Guide” by Fred Larimer on pages 90 and 91. These photos were taken right after the cosmetic restoration was completed.
