The 220 SE (Super Einspritzung) Cabriolet was the pinacle of luxury top-down Mercedes motoring in 1960. Produced for only two years (1959 and '60), just 1,112 of these Ponton Cabriolets were made. With a factory price of $8,091 (when one could buy a fully loaded Cadillac Eldorado Convertible for $7,400), these Mercedes were for the rarified few who could afford the best.
This particular car received a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration about 15 years ago. It was purchased by the current owner in Palm Springs in 2014. Not satisfied, in 2015, he had the body taken apart, stripped to bare metal and then re-finished in Mercedes silver. All trim was removed, polished and re-plated as needed. New rubber gaskets were installed all around. The wood dashboard and all interior trim were renoved and beautifully refinished. Then everything was painstakingly re-assembled. The total for the work done was nearly $30,000. The red leather interior and carpet are gorgeous and show beautifully today, in keeping with the rest of the car. Working original Becker AM/FM radio. Working heater/defroster. Rebuilt clock. The top was replaced about 15 years ago and the current owner has never had it up, except for the photos shown in this listing. Since completion of the work in 2015, the car has been driven less than 3000 miles.Â
Mechanically, this W128 is excellent. 2195 cc inline 6 cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and four-speed manual transmission gives spirited performance. Runs, drives, shifts and stops as it should. All gauges work and register accurately. Newer radial tires with few miles on them. The current owner has been a stickler for service, with dedicated Mercedes specialists performing all needed and preventative maintenance, with "no expense spared." A large file of receipts from the last 4 years of ownership accompany the car. The only reason for selling is to make room in the garage.
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a beautiful 220SE Cabriolet. It is ready to go. Fly in and drive it home. A realistic reserve has been placed on this car in keeping with its rarity and quality. Please bid accordingly.
WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BIDDERS WORLDWIDE AND CAN ASSIST WITH SHIPPING ANYWHERE.
