Car description |
---|
This is a 1994 SL500 with only 87,400 miles. I purchased the car 16 months ago knowing it had not been driven much for a couple of years. I was attracted by the low mileage and strong drivetrain, and good condition of the body, paint, top and interior. My objective was to refurbish the SL for resale which I have previously accomplished on a number of cars (including a 1991 SL500 and 1994 SL320) over the years. I have put very few miles on her during this period. My daily driver is a 2001 S500 since I am a believer in the superior engineering and build quality of 86-05 MBs.
A number of things have been completed in this period of refurbishment. For example, fluids, a/c service, wiring harness replaced, plugs, distributor cap/rotor, ignition wires, battery, mass airflow sensor (MAF). The most time consuming project was to enable the automatic operation of the convertible top, which required the replacement of all hydraulic and electronic controls. The convertible top and hard top both operate perfectly now.
The car spent 90% of its life in Orange County, California with a short period in Florida so there is absolutely no rust. The title is clean with no records of any accidents or other adverse events (such as flood or theft).
Mechanically the car is excellent and the tires at 70%. All items work in the cabin including ice cold air conditioning. The paint is glossy with no dents and no major scratches. The top is flawless with a clear plastic rear window with no yellowing. The interior is in good condition. The dashboard is perfect, as are the seats with the exception of a recently developed 3" tear on the base of the driver's seat which can be seen in the photos. The headliner of the removable hardtop has started to sag.
The SL500 is registered in CA through October, 2019 and will be emissions tested for a buyer who is a CA resident. There are no error codes and the car has an excellent emissions test history, passing easily at time of my purchase.
The earlier generation of the MB roadster, the 560 SL (aka R109,1986-89) has appreciated dramatically in the last 2-3 years which many, including me find puzzling. Will the SL500 (also known as the R129) follow? I think it may since it's a significantly better car according to experts. Regardless of any conjecture, my car is a fun and sound car that can be a daily driver, or just enjoyed on the weekends as its past reflects. In 2-5 years its value may surprise you.
