History

-Sep 2015- present current ownerOdometer: 108,600 (Apr 2019)

-Aug 2001-Jan 2015 Previous owner, JPB of Charlottesville, VA sourced the car thru prominent MB expert collector. Odometer: 98,000 (Aug 2001)

-May 1967-July 2001 Car resided in California

For 1967 (US) model year less than 400 units were imported Sep 66-Jan 67. 230SL model was replaced by 250SL in Jan 67. These cars were hand-built with fit and finish that is incredible. The hood, trunk lid and doors are aluminum to shave weight. During production body panels were dipped and cured in body color, top to bottom, before final assembly and exterior hand finishing. You can still see the faint paint runs underside of hood. These cars were very limited and pricey...in 1967 you could have purchased two Corvettes for the price of a 230SL.

This car sold new in Massachusetts, but immediately moved to California, where it spent the majority of its life. This car has NEVER had any accident damage and retains all original body panels with factory spot welds (no body filler). The shut lines on the car are some of the best I have ever seen. One exterior respray done approximately 20 years ago and the interior was replaced with new proper MB Tex seats, square weave carpets, and all panels installed properly and still looks factory new. The dash pad and wood trim is original and in excellent condition.

All gauges, switches, and electrical on the entire car work exactly as they should. Impressive to see the original clock still keeps accurate time after 50 years and the plastic heat and defrost switches and knobs are all original, not cracked or broken. The car has a black cloth soft top that is very nice, and the factory original unrestored hardtop.

Opening the doors is like opening a vault. They click shut with the least amount of effort. I don't know of a vehicle that has wind up windows that work as smoothly as these do. Sporty and easy to drive, the 230SL automatic transmission (4spd) utilizes a fluid driven system instead of a torque converter, which allows for very positive shifts and you can choose to manually shift with precision. Engine and transmission are original and in excellent well-maintained condition.

The picture of the trunk open shows the original all steel flooring as it came out of the factory. The rubber trunk mat is shown in another picture and is unavailable for purchase new.

Notable upgrade in 2017...

Many 230SL's in the market have worn out 50 year old suspensions that squeak and float, unless they've had a total restoration. A crisp new suspension, although pricey, is perhaps the best improvement to an aging 230SL. The matching rear end assembly is out of the car and included in this sale. This original drum brake unit and factory gear ratio made the engine run at 3800 rpm at 60 mph.

In 2017, this car was upgraded with a restored 1972 450SL Mercedes rear end assembly w/disc brakes(bolt in, no modifications necessary) which nowturns the engine at 2600 rpm at 60 mph for pleasurable freeway cruising. New correct Bilstien shocks, brakes,

steering idler assembly, and newer tires. ($15,000 parts and labor)This upgrade makes the ride very smooth and handling very precise.

Other improvements over the past 4 years...

- New Nardi style steering wheel (original is included)

- New MB sun visors and original restoredBeckerEuropa radio.

- New MB ignition assembly, alternator, MB battery cables and MB wiper arm assemblies.

- New OEM style stainless steel exhaust.

This car is ready to go, tightand an absolute joy to drive. This is adependable investment grade driverto enjoy and preserve, but could easily be transformed into a concourse show car due to its originality, completeness, undamaged condition and striking color combination.

Production for the 230SL from March/July 1963 until January 1967. Production Numbers:

1963: 1465 units

1964: 6,911 units

1965: 6,325 units

1966: 4,945 units (400 US units Oct, 66-Jan, 67 titled as 67 due to US new model year start in Oct)

1967: 185 units (Jan factory production)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total production: 19,831 units (US Import 4752 units ~ 25%)
