History of the 1972-1980 Mercedes-Benz W116
Mercedes-Benz’s introduction of the W116 in 1972 not only signaled the replacement of the previous W108/109 series, but also marked the beginning of the top-of-the-line “S Class” (Sonderklasse). This substantial sedan boasted muscular and imposing styling as well as a new chassis with a 112-inch wheelbase, four-wheel disc brakes, and all-around independent suspension that featured a unique twin control arm front suspension.
A range of engines was available upon introduction that included two different versions of the company’s familiar 2.8-liter inline-six: a 160-hp Solex- carbureted version for the 280S, and a 182-hp fuel-injected version for the 280SE. U.S. customers had to settle for emissions-equipped 120- and 142-hp versions of each car respectively, and both engines could be had with automatic or manual four-speed gearboxes. A 3.0-liter turbocharged 110-hp inline-five became available for economy-minded North American customers in the form of the 300SD in 1977, and this car was only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.

General Comments from owners:
The car rides like a dream, Nostalgia classic with ton of memories, super comfortable. So far, it is very dependable; never failed. A/C is cold. Steering is straight as an arrow; no vibrations anywhere. Paint is beautiful all original and shinny cant believe how they kept this paint so clean and shinny and no rust the car turns heads now and then. Gas mileage is ok for 6 cyl. we love it & you will love it too, this car is certainly a beautiful ride. It floats along like a boat, so may not be suited to sportier drivers, however it is about as comfortable as a car could be. driven less than 3,000 miles a year With only 104 k miles total, my dad had 375,000 on the clock in over seas, it starts every turn, blows no smoke, and rides like a dream. After owning a Mercedes, what can one upgrade to?The engine is great and very strong, huge torque it's fast. The interior is very German, wood has no cracks has all the books but very functional. The handling is great and you have no idea that you're driving a big sedan. a fantastic car that you feel lucky to own. With the new tires it drives like no other, the comfort is uncanny. The engine is a work of art for 40 years ago Benz had twin cam engine and I also just enjoy looking at the car. Prices are rising all the time, so if you want one, get it whilst you can, but make sure you find one with no rust and low miles... Address:
