Car description |
---|
For sale is my favorite little roadster. I am changing jobs and we are moving out of state; our new home does not support my collection of cars. Thus I need to find a new owner for her. Please keep in mind that I am an Engineer when you read the rest of the story. This car should not be a daily driver but a fun weekend/hobby car. The new owner will need to be mechanically/electronically inclined.
PLEASE DO NOT USE BUY-IT-NOW WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR FIRST.
This car has received many-many hours of tender loving care (and lots of money) in the past ten years. Please read the description below carefully.
She started her life as a 1983 380SL Mercedes; I swapped a 560 engine into the car and mated it with electronically controlled fuel injection. The injection system on these (pretty much all 1980s Mercedes) is a Bosch K-jetronic system, which is mechanically controlled injection. With the age these systems crap out, it is a hassle to set them or maintain them. I changed the complete injection system to a electronically controlled system (EFI) with a Megasquirt controller and a wide-ban oxygen sensor. The original (dumb) ignition system has also been replaced by a FORD EDIS electronically controlled ignition (the megasquirt brain controls it). With less air restriction (i.e., air-flow plate) and the improved ignition it is my belief that the car could be tuned to about 350HP (the engine is a 300HP engine originally). The hood received a recess to supply cold air to the new air-filter; some of the pictures show a scoop placed over this recess (I prefer without). I will also provide another hood in case you decide you do not like this modification.
PLEASE DO NOT USE BUY-IT-NOW WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR FIRST.
In addition to the car you will also get:
- The hardtop (as pictured)
- another hood (as explained above) ; bonnet as the English call it.
- the original 380 engine (which was working just dandy when removed)
- another transmission (because I have one).
- some leatherette (read below)
- the original steering wheel (I am a tall guy so I had to put a smaller wheel on).
- I purchased a complete set of rubber weather seals; some have been installed, the rest will be provided.
- about a quart of paint with reducer and hardener for spot repairs (this is the nice thing about single stage paint: you can alway spot repair and polish)
PLEASE DO NOT USE BUY-IT-NOW WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE CAR FIRST.
Next, I will list a lot of things that have been done and then I will list things that still need to be done.
The good:
- EUROPEAN HEADLIGHTS! (with the reflector professionally re-chromed - so they are like brand new)
- brand new (about 3 month old) original Bosch fuel pump with filter
- Megasquirt system - ready to be tuned.
- wideband oxygen sensor with controller
- Ford EDIS-8 ignition with the EDIS controller hooked up to the Megasquirt (so that the Megasquirt can control ignition timing)
- Ford Mustang injectors
- Custom fuel rail system with fuel pressure gauge, fuel pressure regulator, etc.
- K&N filter, oil separation filter.
- Megasquirt controlled idle solenoid.
- Seals on transmission replaced (shift kit installed)
- Before putting the engine in, the engine has received a partial overhaul, some new bearings, both cylinder heads resurfaced, valve jobs, new seals, new timing chain with new guides and tensioner, all new seals and gaskets, (etc., etc.).
- The seats have just been recovered with new leatherette covers (from German Tops), the convertible top cover has also received a new leatherette cover.
- carpets look good (have been slightly refurbished)
- soft top is in decent condition (blue in color).
- The car has been repainted midnight blue (originally it was also midnight blue) - it's a very dark blue. I did the painting with single stage urethane paint. may painting skill are just so-so so the paintjob needs a lot of rubbing. I did not have time to rub it out (except for the hood and the convertible top cover - which look very-very nice). I will tell you how to do it.
- The vacuum motors for the internal fresh air distribution system have all been replaced or refurbished. (as easy as that sound - this is a big job, where the dash needs to be removed)
- The odometer works.
- The fuel level gauge works.
- The wheels are the original bundt-cake wheels with Michelin tires (which are older but with almost no miles and they have not seen the sun).
- The PO cut holes in the back shelf, so I placed some high-end speakers onto it with a good aftermarket head-unit (Clarion).
- most chrome has been polished before re-installation.
- a lot of suspension, brake parts and miscaleneous gaskets and seals have been replaced.
- I am pretty sure that I am missing many, many things.
Things still to be done:
- Polishing/buffing
- The side moldings have not been put back on the car; I have them all - I even have new plastic retainers for them; I did not put them back as that would just make the rubbing/polishing more difficult.
- The sun-visors should be replaced (I planned on making balsa-wood inserts and covering them with the same leatherette that the seats and convertible cover are made of - I have this leatherette material and will gladly give it to you)
- The dash is cracked but I have a dash cap that needs to be glued to it to make it look real good.
- The Megasquirt needs to be tuned more (which is the fun part that I have never gotten to).
- Although the car has a new A/C compressor and new A/C filter, and the system is tight, it has never been filled with refrigerant. It is ready to be filled with R134a but I would probably advise to fill it with Enviro-Safe (or similar).

She is titled under my name and is registered as an antique vehicle in Texas. I also have the car listed for sale locally, so I reserve the right to remove this listing any time. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME!
Finally, please remember that I have not driven this car a lot - although I believe that you could drive it anywhere, please make plans to trailer it.
