1987 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL
Always Garaged Original Paint Florida Car bought from the original enthusiast owner. 74,000 original documented miles. Champagne over Palomino. This Survivor is not a neglected Barn Find but a gleaming Garage Find from the original owners 12 car garage. It was then Exhaustively gone thru to put it in proper mechanical and aesthetic condition from end to end and top to bottom, not an inexpensive task even when you start with a 560 as nice as this. This car runs straight and true and can (and has) been taken on long runs in the left lane at Florida interstate speeds, confidently and safely with the cruise set and the climate control on auto. It will sit in traffic in 95-degree heat without a trace of an issue. It looks, runs and drives like a very well maintained 2 or 3-year-old car.
It has every receipt from every service and repair back to the original window sticker, pre delivery inspection, and delivery inspection. The books and manuals are present and the history is complete to present day with dates and mileage.
Within the past 5000 miles the car has benefitted from having Every fluid changed, every lightbulb changed, climate control including compressor and conversion, tires, belts, hoses, brakes, including front calipers and rotors, lower control arms, tie rods drag link, rear shocks, springs, self-leveling actuator, fuel injectors, hot start system, cold start system and anything else it needed. It starts instantly, runs effortlessly and can be driven anywhere with complete confidence and disregard to its age. The timing chain and tensioners were evaluated and are silent on every type of start-up and will be done at 100k as maintenance.
What’s wrong with it? This car would be The main attraction on any Mercedes Benz showroom floor but if a real car show person got out their microscope…. there are a couple of the palomino interior parts that have clips missing or are cracked and should be replaced, the dead pedal is cracked and there is some very light sun fading on some of the soft goods. The original Palomino leather is very good to excellent and I tried to photograph it in different light. I am not a photographer and the afternoon sun makes it look washed out- which it is Not. The interior is just as nice as the rest of the car . What else...The original floor mats aren’t as stiff as they should be. The biggest flaw is the Becker radio was removed and that was the first thing I was going to replace with the original but I ended up rediscovering my CD collection and that fell down the priority list. In Florida cars rust from the top down so the bottom of the car looks perfect and there is no hidden rust anywhere. There are two thumbnail sized rust spots on the body seam under the back window that are visible only when you open the trunk (see photo). They have been stabilized but should be attended to eventually. Same with a couple of the drip holes in the bottom of a couple of the doors. There is a scratch on the trunk that is barely visible- also only in certain light you can see clear coat checking under the gas filler and a tiny door ding in the right front door and a tiny series of small ones in the left rear where the (matching) 560 SL was parked sometimes too close to it in the owner’s garage (1986 must have been a good year). I tried to show the flaws in a variety of light in the pictures- keep in mind they are very small). A commercial detailer and paintless dent guy could probably eliminate them and were on the list and I haven’t got to it yet. Oh- and I am waiting on the proper 15 tooth right rear window motor as they sent the 18 – or vice versa- the current one is too slow. Please let me know if there is a specific area of the car you would like photographed
I am only selling this as I do Not have a 12-car garage and a friend has finally expressed interest in selling a car to me that I have been after him to sell me for 3 years. This is a fantastic dinner/saloon car or a perfect vehicle for arriving at speed and in style with 3 large friends to antique car events well outside the orbit of a normal classic car.
It is for sale locally and I will reserve the right to end the auction early. I am happy to show the car personally to anyone who would like to inspect it.
