Overview: The W123 1978 Mercedes Benz 280E was way ahead of its time. Introduced in 1976, this 4-door, gas powered, 6 cylindersedan oozed class & sophistication. Made in Stuttgart Germany, the 280E was a favorite for theupper class of the late 70s. With anOriginalMSRPof $22,943 and boasting a plethora of features, its no wonder how this classic becameone of MercedesBenz' best selling models.
Up for sale is a 1978 Mercedes Benz 280E SEDAN. ThisW123 is in great condition overallfor being 35+ years old. With only 64,422 original miles, this Benz was garaged most ofits life and well maintained. See detailed description below.A very rare opportunity. The description is highly informative,I wanted to go into detail regarding the positives and negatives of this vehicle, please view photos to reiterate this. While this car is very nice overall, I do not want to oversell the vehicle.
Exterior: This car's exterior is pretty clean, with some minor flaws. At the nose, a new OEM hood ornament & hood release were installed. The grill has a very small ding in the top right hand side, and contains scratches. The grill also retains its original STUTTGART placard badge. The bumper is in good condition. One of the right headlight lenses is cracked and is marked BOSCH GERMANY. Moving up the hood, their are 4 minor noticeable dings on the left hand side. A few minor paint chips/flakes at the front, along with minor scratches. Moving up over the windshield, one would notice thegaskets and trim to be in good condition. This car boasts a sunroof, though their is a large noticeable scratch just to the front of it. Minor blemishes and white sap stains over the roof. Working over the rear window, one would notice some scratches in the window trim and some white staining and blemishes on the trunk lid. Some surface rust bubbling on the right side of the rear license plate about the size of a silver dollar. The rear bumper is clean but still shows similar signs of use. Moving down the sides of the vehicle, one would notice the straight body, with no missing trim, all (4) original matching hubcaps, along with minor scratches and scuffs. Some surface rust just behindthe left front wheel, wheel wells are clean, no noticeable surface rust/bubbling on the left hand side of the car. On the right however, their is some bubbling surface rust beginning around the right rear fender, in addition to spots of rust along certain places of the body. Some surface rust patches underneath the right rear of the car. See photos. Quarter sized bubbling of surface rust beginning at the bottom corner of the right rear window. The right side of the car also shows scratches and wear, but is very nice considering the age of the car. This car is nearly 100% original and has (4) matching Michelin Harmony tires in good shape. The body is very straight and solid, the car was well taken care of for most of its life. All emblems and trim are present and intact.
Engine: The 6 cylinder gas powered engine has lots of power and responds well. It would need a service to ensure its 100% perfection and could use a steaming. The car idles well, and responds well to powering and braking. A new battery, windshield washer fluid, antifreeze, and radiator coolant were all added, along with fresh high octane gas. The engine starts on the first crank and does not have any serious mechanical issues. A service would be needed to ensure everything is up to date (oil change, tune up, basic maintenance etc.) as the car was last inspected in 2013. Brake lines and plugs should be inspected along with other components, but the car runs very well and has lots of power.
Mechanics: As stated, the car handles, idles, steers, brakes, and shifts well. Their is no fluid leakage, and the car rides smoothly. The brakes perform well, but as stated these components would need a look over. Their is no sputtering, or overheating, the transmission shifts into the different gears well. Gas pedal sometimes gets a bit stuck in a downward position, causing a high idle, but driving and maintenance should fix this minor problem.
Interior: The interior of this car is in very nice condition. No cracks in the dashboard, seats are almost mint, no rips, tears, stains, door panels are mostly clean with a few scuffs. Some minor surface rust underneath the doors. They open and close well, could use oiling. The gauge cluster is clean, steering wheel is near mint. A stain is present inside the center console on the shag carpeting. All windows, locks, lights, hazards, are working, though directional arms have to be held manually when in signaling position. The only issue would be the lack of heat in the car. Could be a compressor, air blows out but is always cold regardless of settings. Becker Europa radio w/ cassette works great and original sound system is working and gets pretty loud. Slight musty smell can be aired out easily. I put in5gallons of gas and read as "full". Both plastic seat adjustment handles are broken on the drivers side (replacements should be about $75). Headliner, visors, rear view mirror, all in good used condition. Clock is functional and keeps accurate time. Front and rear inside lights are functional. Unique feature where all doors unlock when the car is started, and when the driver's door is locked, all the other doors follow suit. Wood grain is nice overall, slight crack in left corner. A few scuffs here and there, but overall excellent and a clean step into 1978. Car includes a few extras in the trunk (car cover, cargo net, misc. extra trim, original spare tire w/ jack). Trunk is clean, norust.Car does not have its original manual but includes its original title when purchased new with 100 miles!
Will be sold with bill of sale, have title from 2001. No returns/refunds/warranties expressed or implied. I have described the car to the best of my ability. Car is sold as is condition. Can be driven, but would recommend trailering (due to lack of service sought by professional mechanic). Registration has not been transferred from the previous owner. Car is not on the road currently. $500 deposit due within 48 hours of sale through PayPal, the remainder to be paid in cash at pickup. Car is located in New Bedford, MA. Shipping arrangements or pickup is the sole responsibility of the buyer.
