Car description

This is a meticulously maintainedMercedes turbo diesel with low mileage when compared to the remainder of the market. The cosmetic and mechanical condition is quite unbelievable for a 30 year old car. Car is rust free from CA/AZ. It starts easily and drives great at city and highway speeds. The interior is next to new. The exterior is incredibly cleanwith just minor dings and imperfections. Paint is excellent with no fading or peeling. Grey plastic portions of bumpers are fading as seen in photos and as is typical for these cars. The photos include the 2" thick file of records from day 1, original Becker Radio, and oil and fuel filter for next service. Service is up to date. No leaks or rust underneath. The majority of the records are from Mercedes of Escondido, inland Southern CA.

This 300D Turbo was equipped from the factory with the OM603 engine. The 603.96 engine has a capacity of 2996cc and was an engineering marvel in pre-chamber design and a technological leap forward from the earlier 5 cylinder OM617. It produced 143 hp at 4600 rpm (euro market without catalytic converter produced 148hp) and 195 ft.lb at 2400 rpm with a compression ratio of 22.0:1. Versions 603.96x and 603.97x are turbocharged. Only turbocharged models of the 603 series were available to the U.S. market.

The single camshaft and injection pump are driven by duplex chain from the crankshaft. A separate single row chain drives the oil pump. The camshaft operated the valves via hydraulic bucket tappets; valve clearance adjustment is automatic. Fuel is injected into a pre-combustion chamber. A Bosch M in-line injection pump is used, with a mechanical governor and vacuum-operated stop control. The pump is lubricated by a connection to the engine oil circulation and the fuel lift pump is mounted on the side of the injection pump. Preheating is by glow plugs with automatic control of preheating time.

Only minor cosmetic wear consistent with a 10 yr old car, not a 30 year old car. All the windows and sunroof operate well. Front brakes will need to be replaced in 5-10K miles, same for tires. Typical 80's Mercedes reverse delay is present but short and mild compared to most. Shifts firmly through all gears with no slippage with upshifts or downshifts. Engine runs smoothly. A/C is ice cold. All gauges work and no lights are on. Car is currently registered and titled in CA but moved to AZ 1 week ago. Just purchase and drive anywhere. A very reliable car.
