Car description |

Up for sale is this 1979 Mercedes Benz 300D in strangely nice condition and low low miles! It is a beatiful light sage green that sets this car apart from many other Mercedes from that era!
I am a private collector that buys imports, usually they are the 2 door variety but when I saw this car that changed for sure. This car is nice, I mean really nice, it is not concours but the car shows signs of it being loved all its life and that is important when buying a vintage car. When anyone sees it they are usually startled by how nice it looks but upon further inspection there are various blemishes like some minor rust bubbles lower left fender and around the sunroof(pictured), signs of small patches of bodywork (impossible to photograph), little dings and dents here and there (again, impossible to photograph). It is a good driver quality car, a little work here and there and the grade could improve even further.
It comes with the original owners manual and records of maintenance. It also comes with spare parts and 3 separate repair manuals. The best part is that it comes with a running and driving 1985 Mercedes 300D parts car!! Yes this is a truly 2 for 1 car deal!!! The parts car has a lot of miles but runs excellent (I've never driven it anywhere but it does go into gear). I learned a long time ago when purchasing a Mercedes Benz it is best to have 2 so you can pull parts when needed rather than pay outrageous amounts these parts can go for.
The 1979 300D, the nice one is the one you care about so I will do my best in describing it. Exterior is an 8 out of 10, it shines and looks beautiful but as stated before there are blemishes so it is far from perfect. I feel it is better to make your car sound worse than it is rather than make a pig sound like a trailer queen. The interior is very nice and original but has seat covers on it that I just can't get off. I pulled the cover off the center armrest and the leather was in not great shape suffering some wear areas as old hard Mercedes leather will do. I would figure the same is true for at least the driver seat. The covers themselves are in fine shape though they are sun faded. The driver seat is extremely uncomfortable and has spring issues from use and age, the passenger side is fine. Rear seats are seem good. All door panels are excellent, the dash has a cover on it and underneath it has a few cracks.
Headlights and blinkers work, the climate control works but I don't have any idea about air conditioning as each time I go to test it the temperature is 40 degrees outside. Power windows work, sunroof is a big mystery to me as I have no idea where the switch is. I hit a few switches and they did not work so figure on working out some electrical gremlins on the weekend.
Now for the big stuff..the engine! Once the little glow plug light goes out and you turn the key it fires up like new. This engine sounds incredible and I have left it running for a few hours just to see what it would do. Runs perfect and never runs hot, just a beautiful symphony of German diesel cylinders doing what they do best. Again, the mechanical maintenance on this car seems exceptional.
I think this car was a part of an estate and the car has sat for a very long time before being sold to me. It does run and drive and all fluids seem good but when taking it for a drive around the block I notice that the transmission just seems a bit sluggish and may be due for a service. Of course I am used to 400+ hp cars so that may have a bit of influence on my assessment, and lets not forget this is a 1979 Mercedes diesel, not exactly the pinnacle of performance cars but figure on doing some maintenance work just to be safe. Oh, and did I tell you I'm including a PARTS CAR that you can rob of any parts you may need!!!
Tires are good, trunk is good (there are a lot of towing wires as it is equipped with a tow hitch) and you get those cool color match Mercedes hubcaps that just make this car pop!
Exhaust sounds great, doors shut as a german car should and the hood closes as if it were a new car.
In all this is a very nice car as is and would look great anywhere from the country club to your driveway and anywhere it is parked it will be noticed so expect a few questions by inquisitive onlookers. It's no speed machine but one cool ride that I am offering at NO RESERVE!!
This car is sold with a bill of sale due to age (any paperwork given to me will be given to the buyer and a bill of sale will be given to you) and it does have the registration in the car to make it much easier to register in most any state but please check with you're state's DMV to be sure of what is needed to title and register this car.
So bid what you want and send a 2 car trailer to get this one of a kind 2for1 Mercedes deal!
I am sure I missed a few things so please email with any questions and I will be glad to assist.
Thanks for looking!
