The MX-5 Miata was created by Mazda as a lightweight two seat roadster with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The Miata, first built in 1989, was conceived as a small, simple lightweight roadster in the spirit of the British sports cars of the 1950s & '60s, such as the Triumph Spitfire, Austin-Healey 100, MG MGA, and particularly the Lotus Elan. The difference being that this car incorporated modern technology safety and reliability. Featuring a smooth running and quick revving 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine, modern ergonomics and Japanese reliability; the Miata offered performance and drivability only dreamed of by the early British sports cars they were meant to emulate.
