This red hot Mazda was sold new at Young Mazda in Easton Pennsylvania and is included with its original owners manual, warranty service book and a spare set of keys.
The Mazda RX-7 was a sports car that was produced by the Japanese automaker Mazda from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 was a 2 seater sports car with pop-up headlights. The compact and lightweight Wankel engine is situated slightly behind the front axle, creating nearly 50/50 weight distribution. This configuration was marketed by Mazda as “front mid-engine”.
Finished in a brilliant Sunrise Red, this RX-7 still shows extremely well and not faded as usually seen with Mazda red paint from the 80’s. The front and rear color-keyed bumpers are in great condition. The original light weight aluminum hood with some minor dimpling, but still shows well. All the shadowline trim pieces are present and have a great finish. The retractable headlights and taillights are in very condition with no hazing or cracks. This Mazda is also equipped with an black vinyl convertible roof that is a sort of hybrid top that combined the best attributes of a hard roof (lower noise level, water-tight construction) with those of a convertible (open air driving). Mazda developed the Windblocker anti-turbulence panel, which flips up unobtrusively and blocks some of the turbulence that intrudes into the passenger cabin.
Inside, this Mazda features it’s original Graphite Grey leather front bucket seats that look excellent showing only a minor wear on the driver’s bolster. The grey door panels, carpet and dashboard are a continuation of the sport interior of this convertible and look fantastic. The matching rear cargo area completes the rest of the interior and is in very good condition. The weather-stripping is excellent, with little or no signs of drying, tearing or shrinkage. The factory heat and air conditioning along with the original equipment gauges have the correct appearance and function as originally designed. The original Mazda black four spoke steering wheel and the Pioneer AM/FM/ Cassette and CD player are in very good condition.
This ’88 RX-7 convertible is nicely equipped with a 1.3 liter twin rotor 13B rotary engine fed by electronic Bosch L jetronic 6-port fuel injection. The power is transferred to the wheels by a 5-speed manual transmission. Drivers assist features include variable assisted rack & pinion steering and vacuum assisted four wheel disc brakes. Front and rear suspension were independent with the front incorporating McPherson struts, and a completely revised rear suspension system a system was adopted that allowed a small degree of rear steer to be created by the rear suspension during cornering. The rear wheels would steer in the same direction as the front increasing stability at high speeds. At low speeds the rear wheels would steer in the opposite direction of the front wheels. The system was dubbed the ‘Dynamic Tracking System Suspension’ and ‘Triaxial Floating Hub’. The optional 15-inch BBS aluminum alloy wheels and Mazda center caps with wider performance radial tires complete the look.
Provided you understand what the 1988 RX-7 convertible’s job was, theses cars are a joy to drive and own. Their production was rather limited, making them a collector’s item from the get-go and you can not go wrong with a very low mileage fine example as this RX7, it has to be one of the best examples offered for sale currently! GET OUT AND DRIVE!
