1956 Continental Mark IICertainly most know the story that after World War II and in the early 50s Ford decided it needed a very prestigious Lincoln to improve the image of the Ford Motor Company as a top manufacture of not only everyday drivers like the Ford automobile but cars that would resonate with people who wanted to buy Rolls Royces and expensive Mercedes. They came up with one of the most wonderful designs of the 1950s, he 1956 Lincoln Mark II. It is interesting to note that during this time that the other manufacturers, eneral Motors and especially Chrysler were coming out with larger and larger tailfins and more and more chrome. The designers at Lincoln created the timeless look of the Mark II clean without any excessive styling cues like fin and extravagant chrome trim. It is not hard to find many collectors who say that the 1956 Lincoln Continental was the finest designed car of the 1950s bar none.
So it is that we have this 1956 Continental Mark II and it should be pointed out that this was one of the earliest produced and was built in June 1955. Having a very low production number is usually very significant to collectors.
Another point we would like to make about this car is the extremely low mileage. The private seller purchased this car from the granddaughter of the original owner in 1993 and he tells us that the low miles of 18,168 is correct. The seller is technically the third owner as he purchased it from the original owner's granddaughter; her grandfather bequeathed the Mark II to her upon his death. It is rare to find a car such as this rare Mark II with such low mileage.
This is an early production model built June 1955.
The private seller said that the 1956 Continental Mark II was the car of his dreams and although the car was in good condition when he purchased it, e had the car sympathetically restored, oda blasted to bare metal with a beautiful black paint job. Note the car was born black.
During the sympathetic restoration he did re-chroming as necessary. The private seller has rebuilt such things as the carburetor, enerator, tarter and booster brake.
The current tires on the car are about 3-4 years old and as you can see from the photos the wheel covers are stunning.
The leather and cloth interior were replaced with like material. The seller has even replaced the carpet through out interior and trunk and replaced the hood blanket.
The original clock and the original radio are not working. Along with the power seat.
The private seller tells us that he has documentation on this car from the Ford Motor Company that indicates that this is a 1956 Lincoln Mark II and was born in June of 1955. Again that makes it one of the earliest Mark IIs manufactured (quite a bragging point).
After the original owner passed away and it ended up in his granddaughter's possession, he car was tucked away for many years. The current owner decided to give it a sympathetic restoration. However he did strip the body down to bare metal and repainted the car. The seller tells us that it starts, tops and runs as it should and he enjoys exercising the car on pleasant weekends and takes it to nearby car shows. The odometer is showing 18, 68 miles on the original 368 c.i. V8 engine and he further states that the engine has not had any work done to it other then keeping it in tune. The interior was done similar to the original style.
Some things that have been done during the sympathetic restoration are the following:
The 4-barrell carburetor was rebuilt, he original generator was rebuilt, he master brake booster. Also a totally new dual exhaust system was installed.
As we mentioned the tires are about 3-4 years old with very low miles on them.
The gas tank was reconditioned and sealed.
Keep in mind this is not a car that somebody was sprucing up to flip, his is a car that the current owner has loved and cared for since 1993 - almost a quarter of a century.
Again, he following items need attention.
Original radio and clock are not working (this is not unusual for a car this age) and the power seat motor.
The owner states that the original antenna was lost during the repaint and he has a NOS antenna (at the cost of $700, hey are very rare and hard to find) that needs to be installed.
In summary it is very important to note that from the view from history, he Lincoln Continental was a pivotal point for the other Detroit major manufacturers. Up to that time they didn't feel that they needed a car to compete with Rolls Royce but once the Continental came out in 1956, adillac had to come out in 1957 with the Eldorado Brougham and Chrysler came out with the upgraded Imperial, hat they even made into a separate division from Chrysler. There are many who will say that when you compare a 1956 Lincoln Continental to a 1957 Cadillac Brougham and Chrysler Imperial there is no comparison in the quality or the taste of the design, he Mark II wins hands down. Besides it is a well-known fact that the 1956 Continental Mark II was not built to make money and that Ford lost at least $1,000 on every Lincoln Mark II that they built. That made no difference to Ford because they just wanted to build the finest car that could be built at that time.
This is a wonderful opportunity to get a Lincoln Continental in our favorite color Black (the factory born color of this car) with a gorgeous interior of leather and cloth from a private seller who has had the car for almost 25 years and purchased it from the family of the original owner.
To top all this off the car has unbelievably low mileage and the owner tells us that it was one of the first ten 1956 Mark II's produced.
This is a wonderful opportunity to have a fabulous car that has worldwide recognition for QUALITY, ESIGN & SUCCESS.
