This car has a nice story. It has been in my direct family since brand new. My grandfather ordered it in 1989 from the factory. He believed then (and would turn out to be correct), that this would be the ultimate declaration of Japanese car quality, a reputation that the Lexus brand carries to this day. He special ordered it without a sunroof, since he was tall.
It was garaged for the vast majority of the last 28 years.
My grandfather passed on, and in 2009 it was gifted to me.
I never thought I would sell this car (at the time it was agreed that it would stay in the family forever). Flash forward to today, I am moving to San Francisco from Dallas, and I will have no need for this car and will not have a garage to store it. My whole family has newer Lexus and Toyota cars, and no one has expressed interest in having it shipped to their home to be garaged.
Since up until a few months ago I thought I would have it forever, it has been on a thorough maintenance plan to keep the drivetrain in excellent condition, while keeping the car original where possible.
-Engine oil and filter was changed every 5,000 miles, and engine runs great. Lots of power, very smooth.
-Transmission fluid is changed every 30,000 miles, with OEM Toyota Type IV fluid, shifts great.
-Power steering fluid, engine coolant, rear diff fluid, brake fluid, everything has been changed multiple times since I’ve owned it.
-This car also comes with a large collection of supplies and parts, purchased for future maintenance. You can install these or sell them or toss them, your decision.
Additional items included with sale include:
-Brand new engine bay plastic under cover (should cause a tiny increase in gas mileage).
-Electric fan + fan shroud + relays, etc (should increase gas mileage by 1 or 2 mpg).
-Extra new in box engine air filter.
-Extra fluids for future services.
-Lots of LED replacement light bulbs, name brand (not from eBay or Amazon) to produce reliable, long bulb life and reduce draw on the alternator (Later Lexus models would get a more powerful OEM alternator).
-Lots of other odds and ends.
Current condition notes:
-Side and back windows are tinted to 35%, as this car has been driven by me in Dallas, Texas for the past 9 years.
-AC has already been converted from R12 to R134a and works great.
-OEM radio was replaced with an Alpine Head Unit with bluetooth, using plug and play wiring harness install connectors so nothing was cut. I might still have the OEM radio too.
-Car includes an Escort Passport Radar Detector that is hardwired in. You can remove it if you don’t want it.
-Electric extending radio antenna motor was removed. You could add one back in quite easily, if you wanted to.
-Comes with valet key, in addition to master keys and wallet key.
-Everything works great unless otherwise specified. Electric seats, cruise control, electric door locks and windows, electric tilt steering wheel, electric dimming mirror, electric side mirrors, fog lights, electric trunk release and electric gas cap release, everything as intended. That’s one reason why the Lexus LS400 is so special.
-OEM subwoofer does not work. This is a common point of failure, the rubber around the speaker cone fails and needs to be replaced.
See pictures for detailed condition:
-The windshield has a crack running along the bottom.
-Body has a dent on the right front fender from when I bumped into one of those metal poles in a gas station. It’s as simple as replacing the fender with an OEM one ($150 or so) and having a good body shop paint to match. I bought all the other trim parts for this, and a new fender, but the fender arrived bent, so I tabled this and never got back around to dealing with it.
-Front bumper and hood are slightly out of alignment due to my bumping into someone in stop and go traffic. This is subtle, and a local body shop I had inspect it said there was zero frame bending, and they could fix it fairly easily. This was something they could do while swapping the fender, so this hasn’t happened yet either.
-There are other marks, imperfections and door dings around the car. See pictures for details.
-The leather seats are in fair condition. The front driver seat has some tiny cracks from age. The passenger seat has some scuffing on the bolster.
-The steering wheel leather has lost some dye and become rough on the front. You might have it professionally re-covered.
Overall this car is an exceptional, low mileage example. Everything works well. Hopefully it goes to a good home with an owner who will continue to enjoy it and keep it running happy for a very long time.
I know this car like the back of my hand, so please let me know if you have any questions and I am sure I can answer.
