History of the Land Rover
The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.
The CarThis 1993 Land Rover Defender 90 was first registered in Spain on 19/10/1993 by the delivering dealer Land Motors S.A. The vehicle is an export built 90 from the Solihull England factory. The vehicle has spent its recent life in Barcelona with its registration and ITV maintained here. It’s an entirely running and driving vehicle with an up to date ITV. It starts first turn and would make a great proposition for rough and ready use or could equally be restored or form the base for a build project. Please see below for condition specific notes.
PaperworkThe car comes Spanish registered or de-registered with a Spanish export title for registration in purchase country. The vehicle is accompanied with a Carfax report that documents annual mileage along with two recent ITV test certificates and an original Land Rover Defender 90/110 Spanish user manual that illustrates all elements of the vehicle. Additionally the car is also accompanied by its original Rover Group Spanish technical inspection logbook that documents the cars technical specification and is complete with every state technical inspection (ITV) from its first test year in 1993 up until 2019.
Condition
Interior
The interior is very original and all present. There are very minimal signs of wear and tear to the dash and door cards. It should be noted that there are rips to the seat bolsters on both the driver and passenger side. The vehicle is currently configured as a 2 seat with centre console, however the Spanish registration specifies homologation for 6 seats, therefore legally the vehicle can be fitted with 2 side facing rear benches.
ExteriorThe exterior of the car represents a substantial amount of original paint, however overall it is in fair condition for age. Underneath presents fantastically with a structurally sound chassis and outriggers. The rear cross member is in fair condition and there are signs of a substandard fibreglass repair to the outer edge. The bodywork has a selection of dents visible in the photo gallery, along with a poor fibreglass repair to a large extent on the left hand side of the bonnet. The footwell uprights, bulkhead and other normal areas for rust are all in great condition, there is only the smallest of corrosion on the very top of the driver side bulkhead behind the snorkel which will need a repair. All lights are functioning, however the light surrounds are cracked. A new set would massively benefit the aesthetics.PaintThe car has received minimal paint work over the years and there is no sign of overspray on any window or hinge seals. The majority of panels still carry original factory paint. The vehicle would benefit from a body refurbishment.GlassThe glass presents well with no chips or cracks to the front windscreen or any notable damage to other windows. The majority of window rubbers and seals are in good condition with no notable perishing or cracking. The passenger and driver door channel seals are cracked and would benefit from replacement.WheelsThis particular model is fitted with oversized Goodyear Wrangler all terrain tyres fitted on Discovery 1 steel wheels.MechanicalEngineThe engine bay houses an original 2.5 200TDI inline 4 cylinder engine – offering incredible torque and power when compared with the older diesel 19J units.Gear BoxFitted with a five-speed manual gearbox - changes freely in all gears including low/high range and lockers.Mechanical OverviewThe mechanics of the car are good, there are no notable oil leaks from the engine or power steering. The car is ready to drive away, with a healthy clutch and plenty of wear left on the brakes. The vehicle comes unserviced, and if it is used straight away it would be recommended to revise all the fluids, Engine gearbox and axles along with filters.
