Car description

This is your chance to own a piece of history. This one-of-a-kind Land Rover 110, the first in America with a Cummins R2.8 engine, has been featured in numerous magazine articles around the world because of its exceptional story.Along with this special vehicle, the new owner will also receive mint condition copies of magazines featuring this truck on the cover and throughout.

The Vehicle:

This 1988 Land Rover 110, along with extensive maintenance records, was imported into the US by Tower Motors in 2017.From there, it was purchased by its current owner and an extensive rebuild began.

Today this truck boasts a wide array of modern features and upgrades.First, its powered by a Cummins R2.8 Diesel engine which is still covered by a factory Cummins warranty.Cooling the Cummins engine is a dual-inline radiator system featuring Summit Racing components, a brand new charge air cooler, and a custom fabricated stainless steel front differential guard housing the second radiator. The exhaust, also featuring a Summit Racing muffler, is tig welded stainless steel from the engine back.A hand machined billet aluminum trans adapter connects the new Cummins engine to the original transmission and transfer case.Inside of that is a heavy-duty clutch, installed at the same time as the Cummins engine, just over 12,000 miles ago.

On its exterior, the truck was given a fresh Olive Drab and Gloss Black paint job in 2017.Its BF Goodrich tires are mounted to 18” aluminum Khan wheels.A complete rewiring in 2019 supplies power to LED lights around the entire truck, including flood lights mounted on the grill guard. The front 2 doors feature keyless entry and power windows, with all 4 passenger doors outfitted with new exterior handles. The sun roof, rear sliding windows, and windshield are all new as of 2018.Intended by its current owner to be a genuine adventure machine, the roof features a Front Runner roof rack, ladder, and easily removeable roof top tent with a built in mattress.

The interior is stunning example custom workmanship. The upper dash, steering wheel, rear center counsel, and various hardware throughout are all one-of-a-kind hand machined billet aluminum, wrapped in Serengeti leather, and held together with stainless steel hardware.Four original forward facing seats, along with four new inward facing Exmoor rear seats, and all 5 door cards, are all similarly reupholstered in Serengeti leather. There is an AC power inverter capable of producing ample wattage.Sound deadening material has been applied generously throughout the entire interior, and then covered with new carpeting beneath and a brand-new headliner above. For entertainment, an oversized Panasonic head unit encased in a hand-crafted aluminum frame powers a 13-speaker Alpine surround sound system complete with an amplifier and 10” subwoofer.Speakers are optimally mounted within a custom, handmade dash board, and within a handmade speaker box placed between the middle row seats.Additionally, the truck is equipped with a DVD player, a reverse camera, a navigation system and hands-free Bluetooth calling.Sparing no modern upgrade, an aftermarket AC system has been installed, and is fed by a genuine Cummins compressor bolted to factory engine mounts.

At the time of its rebirth with a Cummins engine in June of 2018, the truck had 45,770 original miles. In the time since it has been driven from the mid-west to the west coast twice, and around Michigan a hand full of times totaling just over 12k new miles (subject to change as the current owner still drives it on occasion). Thus, at around 58,000 total miles, this Defender is one of the lowest mileage 110s on the market in America today. When not in use, the truck is stored in doors at a private shop in Michigan.

The Story:

The truck’s current owner purchased it in 2017 intending to revamp the esthetics but leave the drivetrain largely untouched as it worked well.Heand his wife are both avid travelers and thought this truck would be a great road trip machine.Upon completion of the esthetic upgrades, the clutch went out.At about the same time, Cummins publicly announced the release of their R2.8 crate engine. With removal of half of the drivetrain being necessary for a clutch replacement, he decided to outfit this Defender with a brand-new Cummins engine.

The problem was that no one had put a Cummins R2.8 in a 110 yet, and so no aftermarket conversion hardware, or online ‘how to’ instructions existed for such a project. And so for 3 weeks in the early Summer of 2018 he spent day and night in his personal machine shop creating and installing all the necessary components for this first of its kind project. What emerged at the end is the truck offered for sale today.

For its test drive, he set out to ensure the vehicle was ready for anything… he drove it from Detroit Michigan, over the Rocky Mountains, through Moab Utah, around the Grand Canyon, and back to Detroit.Just a couple months after that, the truck saw another adventure when it joined the Cummins Repower cruise on a trip that took it from Detroit to the Pacific Ocean and back.

The details of this one-of-a-kind vehicle, its unique place even among rare Land Rover 110s, and its improbable recreation into a country-crossing Cummins powered adventure machine has been documented in publications across America, Australia and the UK.

Today, you have the chance to call this special vehicle your own.In addition to the vehicle, a new owner will receive mint condition copies of magazines featuring this truck on the cover, a robust set of maintenance records dating back to the truck's original purchase, and the remainder of the factory Cummins engine warranty.
