Presenting "Hunterâ€, a very tidy 1990 Land Rover 90 soft top with a 2.5 petrol (gas) engine with only 63k miles, finished in Land Rover Tonga Green metallic with a deep shine. This is a retired Ministry of Defense vehicle - hence the low miles and minimal use - It was released to the civilian world in 2014 and owned by Ray Hunt of R Hunt 4x4 specialist, until now. All panels are original and still show the factory spot-welds on every panel, the panel work is very straight, door tops are all solid, rear tailgate is excellent and overall this is a very straight example. The soft-top is in very good condition as well as the actual framework of the soft top. The Land Rover Freestyle alloys have been refurbished in Tungsten Silver and wrapped in BFGoodrich tires. The interior is in excellent shape for a nearly 29-year-old land rover; the seats are in good condition with all gauges, speedo, lights, wipers, horn, heater etc, all work, as they should. The engine starts instantly hot or cold and runs very smoothly and is very quiet; being a gas 2.5 engine it's very smooth and hushed unlike its diesel brothers. It cruises lovely at 50-70 mph and the idle purrs like a kitten. Some recent service work include: new front brake discs and calipers, poly bushed suspension arms, LED reverse lights and a new carburetor. Overall, you would think this is a much newer model from its tidy appearance and unique history. Meet our 1990 "Hunter" 90.
This 90 has a very unique and distinct history - being owned most of its life by the Ministry of Defense (MOD) up until 2014, based at Porton Down MOD Science Park near Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. It is home to two British government facilities and the 7,000-acre site is one of the UK's most secretive and controversial military research facilities and the oldest chemical warfare research installations in the world. Scientists from Porton Down were among the first to create biological weapons as well as one of the world's most lethal chemical weapons, but now its main purpose is to support the military and help combat terrorism. Porton Down opened in 1916 as the War Department Experimental Station for testing chemical weapons during WWI. Scientists at the lab researched and developed weapon agents used by the British military during the war, such as chlorine, mustard gas and phosgene. After the war the government decided that work should continue at the site and by 1930 it had grown and developed into the Chemical Defense Experimental Station. During WW2 research concentrated on chemical weapons like nitrogen mustard and nerve agents such as Sarin. It then led to the development of CS (tear gas) and VX nerve agent in 1952, one of the most lethal substances ever created which results in a painful death. Luckily, we don't think this Land Rover was used in any scientific experiments, but used for light transport around the base - hence the low mileage. Either way, the history this Land Rover encumbers is pretty cool and comes with a very interesting past.
