Car description

I am a Land Rover enthusiast and this is my 1992 Land Rover Defender 110 left-hand drive in original Portofino Red. This Defender spent most of its life in Spain (including dry storage for 8 years) hence the excellent chassis and bulkhead. It was shipped to the UK in 2015 when I bought it and gave it an extensive mechanical overhaul. This was a part time project being completed evenings and weekends over several years. Work was completed in 2018 and it came to the US as my daily drive. It has a clean Florida title and is garaged in Jupiter FL.As I am planning only winters in FL now, it will seldom be used throughout the year and I cant justify keeping it.

Works included a complete top-end rebuild of the 2.5L turbodiesel inline-four, which included machining the cylinder head, installing new valves, springs, seals, gaskets, head bolts, camshaft belt and tensioner. The water pump was also replaced and a reconditioned diesel injection pump installed. The viscous-clutch fan was replaced in favor of an electric Revotech unit. An Ashcroft Transmissions 5-speed gearbox was installed in 2016 along with a new clutch and heavy duty fork. The transfer box was replaced with a 1.2:1 ratio one from a Discovery in order to improve final drive at highway speeds. It was fitted with new seals, an upgraded input gear, new bearings and retains the high/low range and difflock. The complete front axle was replaced with a reconditioned one including new swivel hubs, brake discs and drive members along with new front and rear propshafts, rear half shafts and Terrafirma Heavy Duty rear drive members. The suspension was also rebuilt with new springs and shocks. An added guard covers the new steering damper and tie rod.

The majority of the paintwork is original and in remarkable condition with few scratches and slight flaking near the rear lights. The old wind up window doors were replaced with brand new 'classic Land Rover' slam doors with the sliding windows and lift up door handles. All hinges and locks are new and all door locks are on one key. I subsequently painted the doors, roof and wheel arches to match the original paint. The removable door tops were also finished in red, but I wrapped them in gloss black vinyl.

The DOT-approved panoramic side windows fitted by Vehicle Glazing Specialists in 2018 not only help keep the vehicle cool but also offers excellent privacy for camping. New 16″ alloy Sawtooth wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2 tires. A new rear Mantec swing-away wheel carrier holds the spare wheel and the wiring for the rear windscreen wiper, washer pump, and defogger has been removed. The interior features brown Exmoor Trim modular seats and a complete military spec Wright Off Road matting sound proofing system as fitted to the Tithonus vehicles. The bench seats in the rear were taken from an ex Tithonus vehicle and new lap belts installed. I deliberately fitted these to one side only. These rare 3 door 110 vehicles are becoming collectable and this is a perfect recreational vehicle. The other side can be fitted with a gun/fishing/storage case or left for a single sleeping space.

A new air conditioning system was installed in 2018 and is extremely efficient. The heater system was disassembled, had a full antibacterial clean, resealed and re-installed with a new blower motor.

The engine pulls very well and the vehicle is a joy to drive. It has been displayed at several car shows. Although not a natural highway vehicle, it will sit happily at 65-70mph. It will of course go faster but mechanical sympathy will prevent you pushing it much more. This project has been a labor of love and has been the result of many hours of detailed work and tens of thousands have been spent. It has been a labor of love and is a rare and unique collectable vehicle. It comes with a British Motor Heritage Certificate.
