History of the Range Rover
The late 1960’s saw the emergence of the recreational off-road market led Land Rover to come up with a radically new competitor to the Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco. Land Rover passed on this challenge to Charles Spencer King, under the project title of “The 100 inch Station Wagon”.
It all started when Rover bought a Bronco and noticed the coiled suspension, this boosted the luxury element as gave improved performance and comfort. He also noted the powerful Buick V8. However, Mr. King gave the Range Rover several unique capabilities, improved carburettors that still fed fuel at extreme angles and the infamous started handle for emergencies.
It was launched in 1970 as “a car for all reasons”. The Range Rover was also the first permanent 4x4 to do over 100mph whilst having a towing capacity of 3.5 metric tons, accommodation for five, hydraulic disc brakes to all wheels and the groundbreaking dual-range, permanent four-wheel drive gear box.
A four door version was introduced in 1981, with the two door version phased out in 1994, it was then named the ‘Classic’ to differentiate from the all new P38a Range Rover.
The Car
This particular example is a 1992 2 door Range Rover, a classic from the third last year of production. This, left hand drive vehicle is a genuine factory original 2 door Range Rover, having come off the production line at Solihull. The car is rust free and has never had any welding, nor does it need any. The car is a European import from Tarragona in the Catalonia region of Spain. Being a late model it benefits from the 2.5 VM Turbocharged Diesel replacing the inferior 2.4 VM of previous.
The car is a very usable classic which will only continue to go up in value, as they have done over recent years. The vehicle drives really well and the engines smoothness is a noticeable element of this Range Rover. There is scope to convert the car to a right hand drive if required. It is complete with beige interior. The headliner has been replacing, due to sagging being a common fault amongst these vehicles. The dashboard and steering wheel are in good condition with all accessories functioning properly just as they rolled off the production line in 1992.
The car has benefited from the following work since being saved from a farm yard in Tarragona :
- Brake overhaul, to include front ventilated disks, new brake pads and rebuilt callipers.
- New drive shaft
- New NOS off side rear quarter
- Pair of new front wings
- New bumpers front and rear to included corner caps.
- New light washer jets
- New front grill
- Refurbished set of 5 Rostyle wheels
- New Range Rover decals
- New Headliner
- Host of new interior trim parts
- New driver side window motor
- Full respray in Alpine white
- Deep steam clean to both interior, engine and underside
Condition
Exterior
The exterior of the car is in great condition, all the panels have good alignment with no signs of damage, dents or scratches. As can be seen from the photographs.
Paint
The car has a revived coast of the Range Rover & Land Rover classic color, Alpine white.
Glass
The glass is all original to the vehicle including the tail gate, of which often fail due to corrosion. The glasshouse is scratch and crack free.
Wheels
The car has a full set of ‘Rostyle’ wheels covered in a matching set of Pirelli Scorpion tyres with a Michelin spare.
Seats
The seats are finished in original beige cloth and the bolsters are still firm. The rear bench has experienced moderate usage although all cloth is still intact. Nothing unusual from a car of this age.
Steering wheel
The car features the original Range Rover Land Rover two spoke steering wheel.
Mechanical
Engine
The engine runs exceptionally well for a 2.5 VM and the clutch is positively light and responsive with a very low biting point. From observation the mechanics and engine have been very well looked after, One key point to note is the AC blows very cold making for a lovely drive in a 1992 classic on a warm day.
The engine will benefit from a full service prior to sale, with an oil change including all filters. The Range Rover has no oil leaks, odd noises or any issues to note, (Engine Number can be gained upon request) To confirm is a matching numbers car.
Gear Box
The Range Rover has the 5-speed manual box with Reverse and all the gears change freely without interference.
The vehicle is UK registered (Reg J866MJL) with a UK Log Book ready for registration in buyers chosen country, either EU or other.
I am happy to provide registration documentation and Carfax on request.
