NON-running white 4 door Jeep Cherokee Turbo Diesel, 2.1L, manual 5-speed, 4WD, 7 day auction, no reserve, fire sale due to business down-sizing/closure. Mileage unknown (appears to be less than 80.000km, 50.000 miles.) I drove the Jeep a couple years ago, but never got around to rebuild the engine after I got all the parts for it. It's been sitting for a while now. It's been sitting on a friend's property and he needs the space for himself now.
PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING:PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS AUCTION UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING FEW CONSIDERATIONS:
This is a J8S 852 85hp (132 lb-ft torque) 2.1L turbo Diesel engine found in a bunch of European Renault vehicles. It is a manual 5 speed (appears to be an AX-5 transmission. Transmission felt firm and precise when the Jeep ran.) The transfer case should be a NP231, as far as I recall. The front axle is a D30 with a rear D35. Gearing is probably 4.10.
I don't recall seeing any rust underneath, but the vehicle has been sitting now for quite some time, so no guarantees on that. I kept venting out the Jeep over the years to avoid moisture build-up, and it seems fine. Interior looks decent. A bit faded and some of the plastic interior is bit dry here and there as is typical for that type of vintage. Tires are OK, but old. They hold air and don't go flat as the previous owner put tubes in them. Full sized spare tire is included. There is a small hole in the roof along the rain gutter (taped off, to avoid water intrusion.) This appears to be for a light bar of some sorts (rumor has it that the vehicle started out as some sort of official vehicle somewhere, but I cannot confirm that.) The roof is straight, but must have had some load on it (slightly caved in, but, pops right back up without a sign of visible damage. This can be easily fixed when repairing the roof liner.) Roof liner needs to be reconditioned (plenty online sellers provide kits with liner and spray glue as a kit.) The A/C system has been prepped for use with R134a, but is empty at the moment still (flushed, new o-rings, and a new receiver-dryer was installed many years ago, but the A/C was never re-filled with R134a. It was sealed off with a vacuum applied to it, but who knows what the condition is all these years later.) Door (side) mirror clamp brackets are partially broken like on most of Jeep XJs. There are some minor dents here and there. Jeep needs a good cleaning on the outside. Paint is actually pretty decent underneath it all. The European side doors seem lighter than the US ones. I'd upgrade to 1996 doors with the internal side impact protection beams.
The Jeep Cherokee XJ was sold in the US with this engine in small numbers from 1985 through 1987 and in the Jeep Comanche only in 1987 (maybe 1986 as well.) This engine was only intended for the European markets where fuel prices are massively higher and Diesel is taxed lower. Lower fuel consumption is key, and not power. This means that this engine is decidedly far from powerful and does not have the torque of a US diesel pickup truck, or whatnot. It is slow and somewhat unrewarding to drive on the highway perhaps to those accustomed to modern day 350hp engines. But, this is a rare piece of Jeep Diesel history, and a true gem for those who understand Jeeps and the finer points of Jeep's history.
The Jeep DOES NOT RUN, but comes with all parts needed (presumably) to make it go strong once again.The previous owner had the original engine overheated and then installed a non-turbo engine (after his re-machined cylinder head didn't work out) out of a Winnebago LeSharo (which is a different engine, even though the internet keeps repeating that these are the same, --they are not internally! LeSharo engines are non-turbo and with that miss the engine oil cooling galley that the turbo version uses.)
The original block should be good, only the head on the original block is unusable (was warped, then machined, which cannot be done to these engines.)
A straight, good, head is INCLUDED! The LeSharo engine block currently in the Jeep is most likely completely unusable (over-revved and 'grenaded' on the side of the highway.)Cylinder head gaskets and misc. small parts were imported directly from Germany by me, the current owner.
The vehicle has previously been titled in VA and WV (current title is MD.) The VIN will need to be validated. Every state has different procedures for that. In WV a police officer comes to the house and validates the VIN. This is an extra fee. Again, this varies from state to state! The title issue is no longer a problem since the vehicle is now over 25 years old anyway.
A sizeable LOT of parts is included in this auction (fills up a full-sized pickup truck bed.) Parts are from miscellaneous Jeep Cherokee XJs ('85-97 XJs). Skid plates, rocker panels, rims, engine block, XJ diesel instrument cluster(s) to show US miles and temp gauge in Fahrenheit, etc. Original European tail lights are not available, has already been changed to US tail lights to pass inspection (however, the European turn signal configuration didn't seem to trigger an inspection issue, neither in VA, nor WV.) Also, there is a pile of axle housings available, which includes an original Jeep Cherokee rear Dana 44 axle (one shock bolt is sheered off), another D44 out of a Ford Bronco(?), but narrower than the XJ D44, a later model year D30 front (non-vac disconnect), a rear D61 (which can be fitted with D60 parts if you know what you're doing, and you'd need to cut/shorten only one axle tube. Note: this was not intended for this low-powered Jeep) a front Ford D44 high-pinion sought-after for XJ front builds, some CJ knuckles (already taken off and cleaned out for a D30 build with CJ outers.) There's an extra set of D44 axle shafts as well. Any axle housing that are not wanted will go to the scrappers.
Engine factory service manuals are included (I might throw in more manuals as I find them.) There are also two overhead consoles and a rear soundbar included. One of the overhead consoles has two extra loud speakers installed (CB/FRS radio, for example. The speakers are 'voice optimized' speakers, not for audio [music]. Use the OEM rear sound bar for pretty amazing audio.)There also OEM bumpers, a full 1997 Jeep XJ 'Up-Country' suspension (1" OEM lift!) and many more parts. Just too many to remember (15 years of messing around with Jeep Cherokees.) All needs to go away with this auction. I believe there is also a NP242 transfer case and possibly an HD242 (out of a military Hummer) somewhere and if I find either or both, I'll throw that in as well, just don't make your bidding dependent on either of these last two items mentioned.
