1984 AM General (AMG) Jeep DJ-5M Mail Carrier Postal Jeep RHD
As its predecessors did on battlefields, the Dispatcher Jeep (DJ) proved itself to be a rugged, reliable asset on the nation's dirt roads and snow-covered streets as the workhorse of the Post Office for over 30 years. Originating from Willys, the DJ-5 proved popular as a mail truck because it was small, nimble, fitted with thrifty engines, and most importantly, was right-hand drive.
The DJ-5M is a two-wheel-drive (2WD), rear-wheel drive (RWD) right hand drive (RHD) Jeep that is completely enclosed, with sliding doors (which can be opened while driving), and a swinging rear door. It also has only the driver's seat and a mail tray where a front passenger seat would normally be. The DJ-5 model was built between 1965-84. This 1984 DJ-5M is the last year of production and has a 150 cu in (2.5 L) AMC straight-4 engine and a Chrysler TorqueFlite 904 transmission.
Even though this Jeep was meant for slow mundane work, it is FUN. It is built very simple and utilitarian, therefore very easy to work on and maintain. Parts aren't nearly as hard to find as people say they are once you know where to look and what hodge-podge of parts from other makes and models AM General drew from. (and Google helps!) Comes with many misc. parts such as brake shoes, wheel cylinder, some hoses, belts, lines, gaskets, lights, etc. and a brand new radiator (all over $400 value and is extra, i.e. not needed right now) and a complete model correct shop manual. It also includes a new folding boat seat we were going to install on the back left wheel well as a jump seat and a seat belt for it. It has a really decent radio too.
As of December 2018, this one was used on a mail route by a Rural Carrier Associate (RCA)! Why buy anything else and convert it to RHD? Use an actual Postal Jeep. Comes with a few original 70's era U.S. Mail door decals and new die cut vinyl decals to help in restoration to a period Postal Service look. Or...paint it olive green and put a big red cross on it (Paint ball ambulance? M.A.S.H fans?), or canary yellow with flames and tinted windows, whatever you decide, it'll draw attention and be loads of fun to drive.
Currently runs, drives, accelerates, shifts, steers and stops just as it should. Almost all the problems it has (rattles, noisy, a little leaky, etc.) are all problems they came with even when they were new. The worst rust spots are on the very thin sliding doors and the wheel wells. That happens when something is made of sheet metal. They say these are hard to find simply because of how utilitarian they were made (they could rust away to nothing), but the frame, body, and hood on this one are all in good shape. Mileage is marked as 'odometer not actual' on title.
The Jeep is sold AS IS and there is no warranty and no guarantees specified or implied. Bid if you want a 1984 DJ-5M. What you see in the photos is what you will get and a signed clean title. It will be made available at its current location in Plainfield, IN (46168), but picking it up, shipping it, transporting it, etc. is completely on the buyer. $500 deposit due immediately at end of auction, balance due in 72 hours. If you fail to pay in full, deposit will be not be returned.

Like a CJ Jeep (CJ-5 Jeep), but 2WD and RHD...you could very likely convert it to 4x4 with CJ parts, you could likely use all kinds of cool CJ accessories, but yours will be unique!

Including a complete running 150 cu in (2.5 L) AMC straight-4 engine, the Chrysler TorqueFlite 904 transmission, dozens of body parts and mechanical parts and all the window glass that go for $100+ each, there's at least a $4,000 value here if you bought all those parts...but this comes assembled, complete, and ready to drive down the road! Not to mention it looks like, and did, just recently leave mail delivery service. Did I mention it's fun??
