Here is an opportunity to bid on possibly the lowest mileage one owner thirty five year old Jeep CJ-7 in America today. If not the lowest it is certainly one of the lowest for sure. As it spent the majority of its life in a garage in Borrego Springs California I hesitate to call it a "barn find" but it is a truly unique one for sure.
I am selling this Jeep on behalf of the 90 year old owner who is now living in a retirement community. It was one of several vehicles kept on hand for use when she and her husband were at their second home at the Borrego Air Ranch. It's a pretty simple concept; fly in, park the airplane, and use a vehicle garaged there for ground transportation and desert exploration. Because of its size and limited passenger capacity it saw very little use. They also had a Ford Bronco and a Ford truck and various sedans over the years as well as Honda Rancher ATV's which they drove much more than the Jeep. I am very familiar with this family, their lifestyle, and this vehicle, and can personally attest to and guarantee the mileage is authentic. And of course there will be the Federal Odometer form signed under penalty of perjury. No problem, it's for real.
When I went to pick it up it would not start. It had not been driven or started in about two years, since the patriarch of the family passed away in 2016. Consequently because parts and repairs are hard to come by in a desert community with a population of 3,429 (you have to order everything) and because I am in Spring Valley ( a San Diego suburb) and because delivery will be easier here, I brought it home on a trailer for repair and sale on eBay. One fuel pump & filter & hose replacement and carburetor clean out and five gallons of fresh gas later..... she runs excellent. The radiator hoses were replaced recently as well. We also performed an oil change on it. Except for the old tires I would drive this vehicle anywhere.
The Costco / Kirkland radial tires have a DOT code of BEHFSL3387. Which does not translate to anything I am familiar with. Ignoring the letters and just using the last four digits it would seem that they were born the 33rd week of 1987. But they are gorgeous tires with 80% of tread left showing no checking or deterioration. I found a Costco (El Centro, CA) receipt in the glove box for four Kirkland tires dated 11/21/1996 so I am thinking these tires may be twenty two years old. I may be wrong but in my opinion anyone driving this vehicle over 25 miles per hour should replace the tires to be safe. Or perhaps someone with more expertise can decipher the date code. They sure are nice looking.
This Jeep has never seen rain. Being in the desert since new there was not much opportunity. And if it was stormy no one went out in it! This was not a "mudder". Consequently there is practically no rust on it. The right front fender does have a ding, please see the photo, where someone nicked a boulder in one of the canyons. Someone straightened it out pretty well and, frankly, except for the missing paint, one would barely notice it. It did not even break the side marker light. SEE THE PHOTO. It was a minor ding.
With the exception of normal replacement items such as battery and tires and oil and fuel filters this vehicle is 99% original. I say 99% because it has a funky aftermarket Am/Fm / Cassette radio branded Shogun. It is a clean install and works, or the radio does anyway. I have no cassette to test the tape side with. All of the gauges work, the pedal covers are great, the seats and the interior is exceptionally clean and original. The car had never to anyone's memory ever been washed other than a quick rinse to get the dust off. There are some minor exterior sage brush scratches on the blue paint. The shop that got it running without asking detailed it and buffed out the majority of the scratches. And made it pretty under the hood too. I was astonished at how pretty it is now! And the shop owner wanted to buy it!
This sale is without reserve. This CJ-7 will have a new owner in a few weeks. It currently has personalized license plates which do not go with it. They are being kept by the family as a keepsake. We will provide a California One Trip Permit, no extra charge.
We have not been able to find the title so have ordered a replacement. If it is not here before the new owner picks it up they will receive a California DMV application for lost title and statement of facts Form accompanied by the 2019 registration. California registration has been paid through June of 2019. This is simply an interim measure. I have a stack of registration cards dating to 1984 which go with it; provenance. When the new California title is received it will be forwarded immediately. I am told a new title takes about a month right now as California DMV is behind, as usual. If a Californian purchases it, I will smog it. I have no doubt it will pass but see no need to spend the money if it's going to another state. If it fails we will unwind the deal until it passes. But it's going to pass.
The Carfax report is absolutely clean. I do not know why AutoCheck has no record.
Delivery. If you wish to fly in and drive it home there are several tire stores close by. Choose a brand. Seriously folks, I don't think these tires can be trusted at freeway speeds. I will pick the winner up at the airport and bring you to the Jeep, about 14 miles. Of course if you are local, come and get it. Or if you want it delivered I will deliver it on a trailer for a dollar a mile, one way. Or, we have had pretty good luck with UShip. You choose. The last vehicle we sold went to Virginia Beach at a cost of $1,500 with UShip. That's coast to coast. I have it garaged and will keep it there forfree forfifteen days until winner can arrange shipping. After that it's $30 a day until gone.
Test drive? Absolutely. Contact me and we can arrange a time. As a side note to any pilots out there, the Borrego Air Ranch home with hanger and four car garage is also for sale.
