1980 Jeep Cherokee
For sale by private owner. Jeep located in Calgary, Alberta Canada (approx. 3 hrs directly north of Montana). eBay does not have provision for people with multiple residences.
Overview...I think the best place to start when describing this Jeep is it’s chronological beginning. It’s actually a nice story. (Also, it’s a decent tribute to it’s former owners). Personally, I like to know the background and history of every old vehicle we buy. Plus, I feel guilty as hell selling this Jeep. Some of you may not care about a vehicle’s background and think of this as pure“fluff". If so, you can skip down to the black font again. I feel it’s of relative importance (being a collectors item) to pass it forward for those of you who may want to know though.
Story of this Jeep starts when a young farmer and heavy duty mechanic met a beautiful young girl. She was in this country showing some cows from her native Switzerland. Despite a little language barrier, they fell in love and soon got married.
Shortly after, they started a farm, and built a very modern (for it’s time) looking home. They started raising Swiss cows over here. While starting out, and until the farm got a little further ahead, she got a government job in town. In order for her to get safely back and forth, they went to the dealership and bought a brand new Jeep Cherokee. THIS is that Jeep.
She drove the Jeep back and forth to her job in town for several years. In 1980, the husband bought a Toyota truck and, with 2 exceptions, the Jeep was never touched again.
The husband stated to me that couple’s desire was to keep the Jeep looking pristine. Reading between the lines, and without asking, I felt as if the Jeep was stored away to be used as a family vehicle. Sadly, they were never blessed with children. Perhaps it’s a bit personal to say but, I saw the way this beautiful older lady and her husband looked at our children. It was with such quiet kindness. These were 2 of the purest people I have had the pleasure of ever meeting. Throughconversation I learned that they have no heirs. Their goal is to sell the farm (only to someone interesting in taking proper care of it), then spend the remaining portion of their golden years by traveling and enjoying visiting people they have gotten to know through years of livestock exhibition.
Back to the Jeep....It wears it’s last yearly registration sticker on the license plate, from 1982 (expired 1983). It was not used since 1980. As mentioned, on only 2occasions, was it taken from the garage, driven around the property, then returned. The original owner, being a former heavy duty mechanic, ensured the Jeep was stored away properly. The battery was removed, and engine properly fogged. Unlike most dirtybarn finds, the area of the building that housed the Jeep was not shared by livestock, and was a clean section. Alongside the Jeep was a box that contained the original headlights (removed when new to upgrade), along with every otherpiece ever touched. This includes old air filters, spark plugs, and anything imaginable.
Since owning the Jeep, we have had taken measures toresurrect it’s running/driving condition. It was important that nothing was done to detract or tamper with it’s genuine level of authenticity. I wanted to have itwet sanded and polished to a brand-newsheen but, couldn’t bring myself to tampering with it more than absolutely necessary. As you can see from the pictures, It obviously looks very very good already. This Cherokee is truly a amazing find. It has got to be one of the most remarkable classic vintage SUV’s most people will likely ever see.
A tough decision...We have an unintentional collection of probably a dozen or so old cars. If we didn’t already have a low mile 1980 Cherokee, I’d never sell the red one. This ’76 is in superior condition, a much more desirablecolour (plus a 4-speed!!!). Ultimately, we have had our other one a while, and feel a bit more attached to it. Another deciding factor is that I’ve got some plans for the 1980, and cannot find it within me to disturb theinnate originality of the red 1976 Jeep. We used to have more vehicles but, have spent 2 years narrowing that down. I thought we would never sell another. Check our eBay feedback and you will see 15+ comments from happy buyers. Besides maybe only 1 more, the only cars we are stuck with keeping are eitherirreplaceable to us, heirloom, or sentimental.
UNRESERVED:Now, as stated, I am selling this absolutely UNRESERVED. Starting price is 250 dollars. Asides from helping arrange your shipping, I have no time to take 99 more pictures, or have 2-hour long conversations. It's probably a misnomer to say I don't care about price, but I am knowingly sacrificing dollars to put more emphasis on a hassle-free and quick sale. This will be a great deal for someone, as long as they are genuine and sincere. As such, I am not going to get into long drawn out discussions as to whether it's a 8.5/10 condition, or 9/10. Let's just call this a 1/10. Perspectives vary so, for ease of sale, please disregard everything else and assume this car is an awful wreck salvage-value scrap project vehicle with worn out tires, poor exhaust, broken and missing pieces, and needing everything. My goal is to avoid insincere and zero-feedback bidders who will not follow through with their commitment. My goal is to find somebody genuine, who will really appreciate this Jeep, save some time this week during the sale, and devote more to helping the new owner afterwards with arranging their delivery.
Also, very important…. review our feedback please. Each is for a 40+ year old car! You’ll see that getting every last dime of money isn't my objective. Money we have. We do not have time. Money usually comes relatively easy. Sometimes money goes easy too (lol), but... it can be replaced.Time cannot.
During our time on eBay, we've figured out a few things... We learned that 2 very important things are communication and procedure. Our little procedure actually focuses on communication. It goes as follows:
If you don't want to potentially risk losing out, and would like to take another route by MAKING AN OFFER, please contact me. Most of our auctions have in fact actually ended with me accepting an offer. I always appreciate the early-bird approach.
DELIVERY:...to most states and destinations is in the $1500+ range. Please keep that in mind. Budget for at least this amount. Texas and Florida, and other far southeastern states, are obviously a bit more at minimum $2250-ish. Any required inspections, certifications, registrations, paperwork, or anything else are the buyer's responsibility. I don't know the rules in each particular state so, am selling as per Alberta rules. My wife has become pretty good at setting up shipping and, is happy to assist. Rest is up to you. Payment is by bank transfer, US account to US account. As stated, I don't ask for Paypal. Once payment is received, everything else is ready to proceed from there.
CALLS:If you'd like to speak over the phone, I'm happy to hear from you. Please write and we'll make arrangements.
Now, (including thelongish back-story), I believe I’ve covered everything I can think of.I suppose selling unreserved is a little like yanking off a band-aid quickly.
With that said, here goes…………..
