They're inexpensive to own and maintain, they tend to hold their value well once the point of maximum depreciation has been reached, the parts supply and support network for Jeeps seems almost endless and above all...Jeeps are just plain fun.In sunny weather, with the top (and doors) removed, driving a Jeep is like driving an old sports car. If you happen to live in the snow belt, the Jeep's 4x4 capability is confidence-inspiring. If you like to explore off-road, the Jeep's tight turning radius, short and narrow wheelbase and good ground clearance are perfectly suited to the task.Jeeps are also like a blank canvas when it comes to personalization and modification. There is nothing that you can't repair, restore or replace on a Jeep, relatively inexpensively if you're a hobbyist do-it-yourselfer. The potential for modification either for purpose or show is limitless.It's worth noting, too, that there have been many serious competitors over the years vying to take away the Jeep CJ and Wrangler's market share, but none has had the staying power. International Scout, Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger, Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Series II, Ninety, and Defender, Suzuki Samurai and Hummer H3--all competed directly with the CJ/Wrangler and all have been relegated to the history books. The Jeep brand has even outlived most of its parent companies in the U.S. Renault, which partnered with AMC in 1980, no longer sells vehicles here, and Chrysler lives on only with sponsorship from overseas companies--first Daimler and now Fiat.Jeep enthusiasts have their own magazines, clubs and events. Dozens of buyer's guides, history books and manuals have been written about America's favorite off-roader, as well. By no surprise, you'll find a healthy Jeep section in Hemmings, with your next weekend driver or parts for your current one on tap.Jeep's origins have been widely reported. According to the current regime at Jeep, in July 1940, the U.S. military informed automakers that it was looking for a light reconnaissance vehicle to replace the Army's motorcycle and modified Ford Model T vehicles. The Army invited 135 manufacturers to bid on production, and developed a lengthy specification list for the vehicle, including: a 600-pound load capacity; a wheelbase less than 75 inches; a height less than 36 inches; a smooth-running engine from 3 to 50 miles per hour; a rectangular-shaped body; four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case; a fold-down windshield; three bucket seats; blackout and driving lights; and a gross vehicle weight below 1,300 pounds.At first, Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company were the only two companies answering the call. Soon, however, Ford Motor Company entered the picture, and competition began among the three over which company would receive the lucrative government contract.Each company produced prototypes for testing in record time. Bantam's chief engineer, along with a team of Bantam executives, worked out a design, and the company built its field car within 49 days.Willys-Overland Vice President of Engineering Delmar G. Roos designed the Willys Quad. Ford developed its Model GP, known as the Pygmy, which was powered by an adapted Ford/Ferguson tractor engine. Each company delivered its prototype to the Army in the summer of 1940 and received approval to build 70 sample vehicles.The Army took possession of these vehicles in November 1940 at Camp Holabird, Maryland. Each of the three designs exceeded the Army's specification of 1,300 pounds, but the Army soon realized that limit was far too low and raised it for the next round of vehicles.The Army issued the next round of contracts in March 1941. Bantam was to produce 1,500 Model 40 BRC vehicles, Ford would build 1,500 modified and improved GP Pygmies and Willys would build 1,500 Quads. Further testing and evaluation led to the Army's selection of Willys as the primary manufacturer.Subsequently, most of the Bantams and Ford GPs produced were sent to Great Britain and Russia as part of the lend-lease program. In Great Britain, the Ford vehicle was popularly known as the "Blitz Buggy."
