THE XK120 JAGUAR…is the car which established Britain as a maker of great sports cars and put Jaguar on the map. The XK120 was ultimately available in three versions or body styles, first as an open two seater (OTS) described in the US market as an open roadster, then as a Fixed Head Coupe(FHC) from 1951, and finally as a DropHead Coupe(DHC) Sport Convertible from 1953. The drop head coupe (DHC) Sport Convertible was very luxurious and more civilized than the OTS. It combined both the luxurious / comfort features found in the DHC Sport Convertible, and the best of the sporty open car features found in the OTS. It has a padded, lined canvas top, which folds onto the rear deck behind the seats when retracted, and roll-up windows opposed the cumbersome curtains found in the OTS. Dashboards and door-caps in both the DHC Sport Convertible and the closed coupe (FHC) were beautiful wood-veneered, whereas the OTS was leather-trimmed. All models had removable spats("fender skirts" in America) covering the rear wheel arches, which enhanced the streamlined styling and is very elegant looking.

The initial XK120 was launched in 1948 at the London Motor Show. The idea was to build a sedan car with a race car engine to best appeal to consumers.William Lyons, the brand'sfounder, saw the future of the company as based on sedans, Lyons didn’t expect to sell many of his novel XK sport cars—they were mainly being used totest engine components and body composition for that potential futuresedan. Demand for the XK120 exploded, especially in the United States, where drivers had never seen a postwar sports car.

The XK120 was much more modern than anything else people had driven, especially for the American driver. They had only the ponderous cars from the '30s, and those were put back into production with no updates right after the war. The feel of the sports car was so new to them.”

Early models came with a straight-six, 160-bhp “XK” engine and a feline body molded out of the aluminum and trimmed in ash wood. Later the bodies were a combination of aluminum and steel; the bonnet, boot lid, and doors were aluminum, and the body/tub was steel.Preliminary results were exceptional; the early XK120 Jaguars set many speed recordsand had numerous successes from Daytona to Le Mans. Movie star Clark Gable owned several of the first XK models, and Harrison Ford currently owns an XK DHC Sport Convertible (British Racing Green/Biscuit Interior); they have since been in many movies, includingIt Should Happen To You, Kiss Me Deadly, Batman Forever, andThe Talented Mr. Ripley.

The Striking Jaguar XK120 is a Good Investment for Vintage Car lovers. The difference between many famous exotic collector cars and the Jaguar XK120isthat while hard-to-find Ferrari'sand Maserati’s command an additional tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, the more prevalent XKs cost less and remain reliable as casual drivers. That's not to say they're ubiquitous—not by a long shot.Jaguar made12,078 XK120s from 1948 to 1954 (only 1,769) of the Rare XK120 DHC Sport Convertible);by comparison, it made more than76,000 E-Types, its most iconic car.

XK120’s are reliable to drive, and many of the best are in North America. In England a lot of cars from that era just didn’t last. England is an island surrounded by saltwater. The climate isn’t conducive to preserving cars.

In Summary the DHC Sport Convertible was the model of choice when one wanted a True Sports Car Experience delivering the Thrill of British Open-air Luxury Motoring yet didn’t want to sacrifice Comfortand Elegant Styling.

__________________________________________

THE XK120 DHC Sport Convertible BEING OFFERED ---- originally came from California where it was beautifully restored and the engine rebuilt by Alan Taylor of Escondido, a specialist in rare, vintage / classic cars. The car was an unmolested original car at the time it was rebuilt. More details of the restoration are outlined below.

I am selling the car for a meticulous friend of mine who is the current owner whose name is Michael. Michael has several high-end Classic British Sports Cars and has decided to downsize his collection because he is moving. If you call me, I will answer any questions you may have, and if you are serious about purchasing the car, I will put you in touch with Michael. We welcome inspections prior to the end of the auction.

Since its restoration the car has had very few miles put on it; it's been basically used for shows and pleasant sunny afternoon drives. The speedometer currently shows 8769 miles which is believed to be the miles put on the car since the restoration. Michael has put 3000 of the 8769 miles shown on the car since he has owned it. Michael has taken very good car of the car and has always kept the car in a heated garage and inside a Bubble Cover as seen in one of the photos. And Michael always kept the battery hooked up to a trickle charger during the winter.

To give you an idea of who I am, and my qualifications dealing with Jaguars, see my personal website that will show you my personal collection of Jaguars and classic motorcycles. My website is https://seepictures.wixsite.com/genesgarage. I’ve been restoring Jaguars for 40 years and a member of the Minnesota Jaguar club for 45 years; you’ll see my name on the Minnesota Jaguar Club of Minnesota as the XKE Technical Coordinator.

Michael has had routine maintenance performed on the car over the years which is well documented; the documentation will accompany the car. Additional documentation is included from the previous ownership along with a Heritage Certificate, Owner’s Manual, Logbook, and More.

As seen by the photos the car is finished in a stunning Dark British Racing Green with a Beautiful Biscuit Connolly Leather interior and matching convertible top. The beautiful wood veneer dash and trim interior is gorgeous; it belongs on a wall as a piece of art.

CONDITION IS AS FOLLOWS

(Ratings are from 5-1, 3+- 1 being Show Quality and 1 being Concours)

EXTERIOR PAINT(2) --- The exterior is painted is Classic British Racing Green; it’s not concours but as seen by the photos the car, including the paint, is a show car and shows very well. A few very faint fisheyes in a couple small areas on the paint but hardly noticeable. British Racing Green is one of the top, if not the top, colors most collectors look for in a Jaguar. It’s classy and It tends to further distinguish the beauty of this car in the sea of red cars at any local car show.

BODY SHEET METAL / CHASSIS(3-2) ---Body is solid and in show condition. It has no rust and to the best of our knowledge has never been in an accident. It spent much of its life in California and of course since being brought to the Midwest it’s only been driven only in the summer months. However, because it’s been driven the underside is dirty and obviously shows signs of use----but solid and good condition. This can be seen in the photos of the car. Regarding potential rust, the bodies on the DHC Sport Convertibles were a combination of aluminum and steel; the bonnet, boot lid, and doors were aluminum, and only the body / tub was steel. So not all of the body sheet metal was prone to rust.

INTERIOR(2) ---The contrasting biscuit interior is beautiful as seen in the photos. The floor mats are original, and it comes with plush floor mats to cover and protect the original mats.Gorgeous burled walnut accents the dashboard, A-pillars, and tops of the doors.Note the chrome door pulls on the tops of the doors. The beautiful Biscuit colored interior is the color of choice with a British Racing Green exterior.

Behind the seats is a parcel box, this was only offered in the DHC Sport Convertible and the FHC models. It’s a compartment that sits above the battery compartment; it provides additional luggage space.

ENGINE BAY(3) --- The engine bay is clean including the beautiful 3.4-liter engine. The beautiful dual overhead chromed valve covers and twin SU horizontal carburetors, nested nicely in with the other beautiful artfully placed components, is a piece of art. It’s not concours, and has signs of use including patina, but well maintained and very impressive looking. New aluminum radiator with driver operated extra fan to keep the engine cool. Has driver activated electronic choke.

TRUNK / TOOLS(2) ---Clean /Original. CorrectXK120 Spare Tire/Wheel included along with the original Tire Jack, Air Pump and Complete Correct Tool Roll, and Original Grease Gun.

WHEELS/TIRES(2) ---Great condition; tires only have 3000 miles on them.Includes a spare wheel which is stored beneath the trunk floor in a separate compartment.

GLASS(2) ---Glass is good throughout; only very minor wear / patina. And unlike the XK120 OTS the FHC windows are regular roll-up windows; not cumbersome curtains.

TOP (2) --- Good condition; beautiful English Wool headliner.

CHROME (2) ---Very nice; redone at time of restoration.

EXHAUST SYSTEM (2) --- Stainless-Steel exhaust system installed

HOW DOES IT DRIVE/RUN?

The car runs as Stirling Moss noted when he first drove the 3.4-liter XK engine; “nice smooth power, and lovely noise”. It starts with ease and idles great, and the gears shift smoothly as the engine roars through each gear. Powerful, robust, and beautifully sonorous, these straight six engines are among the very best six-cylinders ever produced. The XK120 DHC Sport Convertibles employ an automatic electronic choke system so there’s no need to fiddle with a cumbersome manual choke.

Allof the instruments are fully functional along with all switches and accessories; system is charging, tach works perfectly, and oil pressure is good. And the hood latch, which is a common problem on the XK’s, works well.

Brakes were rebuilt within the last couple thousand miles, so they work well. A new aluminum radiator and driver activated electric fan were installed in 2018 so as a result the car runs cool and doesn’t overheat in warmer weather which is a common problem with vintage Jaguars.

The classic original style Tribar Headlamps and two Lucas Fog lights provide ample lighting when driving at night----and look very cool as well.

And as outlined above continuous service has been carried out on the car all contributing to a car that is ready for Show and/or for driving. BELOWIS A LINK THAT WILL CONNECT YOU TO A YouTube COLD START VIDEOdone by Michael. As you can see Michael first put his hand on the exhaust manifold to show that the car was cold. He then made his way to the driver’s seat, turned on the ignition, waited for the gas pump to activate and then started it. The car was put in storage three months before this cold start and hadn't been started until now. It does kick in well after just a few seconds. Note the oil pressure and the battery charge, both good. The idle is at 7000 right where it should be. Obviously, the temperature is low because the car was cold. Everything looks fantastic and the engine sounds great.

Granted, few collectors of beautiful objects, whether Picassos or Patek Philippes watches, admit tobuying for purely investment purposes. But in this case, it might be relatively true. While they hold their value, this is a car you buy for along-term love affair.
