Introduced in 1961, the E-Type roadster proved to be an immediate success. Designed under the guidance of Sir William Lyons, the car was a longer and lower version of Jaguar's D-Type. Manufactured between 1961 and 1975, its combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing established the marquee as an icon of 1960s motoring.
1E 15540 was completed at the Browns Lane Jaguar works on May 8, 1967 as a US market example, distributed through Jaguar Cars handling in New York, wearing Cream paint over Black leather upholstery and matching top. as verified by Jaguar Heritage Trust displayed in an embossed leather binder. This particular XKE is known as an open-headlight Series 1 (aka S1) - not to be mistaken as a Series 1.5. The Series 1.25s were identical to the standard Series 1s except for one item the bonnet.
This bonnet featured open headlights for the first time on an E-type. All other component areas, including the interior and engine compartment, were identical to the late Series 1s, such as the 4.2 XK engine with three SU carburetors, polished aluminum cam covers, and single radiator fan, triple wipers, dashboard toggle switches and interior door handles. Contrary to popular belief, Jaguar did not use up inventory on hand to produce the Series 1.5s; all component changes on the Series 1.5s came about simultaneously beginning with the chassis numbers cited during the month of August 1967.
An accompanying dossier of records dating to 1985 indicate the Jaguar received quite a bit of attention and upkeep to its 1991 restoration, performed by noted marque specialist Bassett's Jaguar of Wyoming, Rhode Island. Detailed invoices document the work completed, as well as maintenance and care performed to the late 2000's and most recently. Today, the nicely mellowed restoration presents well, while offering the ideal driver experience and presentation. The cabin is equipped with supple leather seating, Blaupunkt radio, and period style supplemental Amco rubber mats. The canvas top shows well and tight with clear window and a matching boot cover for open motoring. Exterior highlights include bright glossy paint and chrome, along with period style Amco bumper guards and luggage rack, complemented by newer (2018) 185VR15 Michelin XVS tires and tubes.
In 2006/7, the Roadster would receive uprated shocks all-around, aluminum radiator, electric fan, rack and pinion, Wilwood 4-piston calipers, and stainless-steel exhaust. The driving feel is as one would imagine - sporty, tight and very responsive. A recent January 2020 inspection, tune-up and scheduled maintenance addressed freshening several suspension and other rubber components, as well as the fuel system for continued excellent road manners.
In addition to 35 years of records, this XKE is offered with an Owner's Operating Handbook and Maintenance Chart, concours-ready and complete tool kit with grease gun and Thor hammer, jack in pouch, a plethora of original parts, Parts Catalogs and Service Manuals. We offer this Open-Headlight Series I Fixed Head Coupe for worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
