Car description

1971 International Harvester Scout II 4x4 with the original removable TravelTop and the pickup cab conversion. This is an EXTREMELY rare transformer - 4 seater SUV, 4 seater convertible, or a 2 seat pickup. The perfect Scout for all your needs and wants. You can’t go anywhere in this gem without turning heads.

Runs and drives beautifully. AMC 258ci I-6 engine with 4-speed manual transmission which means it has plenty of power but also great gas mileage. Removable 2nd row bench seat. Fog lamps. Heater. Includes original line setting ticket in its under-hood mount! And, original accessories you never see such as the oil can, jack, fishing pole mount, and 1971 Scout II repair manual. The interior is dusty from storage but will sparkle after a little cleaning. No dents or dings we see, a little cosmetic rust and chrome rust, but nothing that detracts from its awesomeness. No frame or chassis rust.

It was said to have had a full overhaul, including removal of the body from the frame, rust repair, a repaint in Tiffany Blue, and an overhaul of the 258ci V6 engine in about 2013/2014. Less than 5,000 miles have been put on the engine since. The five-digit odometer reads approximately 47K miles, with actual mileage unknown. The interior and underside of the body were coated in bed liner, seats replaced / refurbished, rubber replaced as needed in interior, and a roof liner added. The glass in the TravelTop was replaced and tinted. The rear bumper was replaced and the front is original . It appears everything else is original, working, and cosmetically amazing for this vintage - locking hubs, steel door liners, buttons, knobs, radio, fishing pole mount, oil can, jack, fog lamps, heater, and original after market tachometer. It also has a tow hitch and a plow attachment. The line setting ticket in its mount alone is a testament to the care this car has received.

This fantastic Scout II is offered with BOTH the TravelTop and pickup top and they are said to be original. YOU DO NOT SEE THIS. This car looks great and will get all the attention, while also being a reliable driver. It is the perfect vintage vehicle - fun and full of utility. Clean Kansas title in the seller’s name.

A little history on the Scout II:

After the original International Scout proved that four-wheel-drive vehicles are as fashionable on the boulevard as the barnyard, IH totally redesigned their little truck for 1971 to become bigger and potentially more powerful. Introduced early in the year, the Scout II shared design cues and some components with International’s line of pickup trucks. The larger Scout II with its 2nd row seating was now more of a competitor to Jeep’s Wagoneer and Cherokee rather than the CJ-5.

The base Scout II powerplant in 1971 was the 196ci I-4 engine, but International also offered the 232ci I-6, 304ci V-8, and a 345ci V-8. An AMC 258ci I-6 would replace the original I-6 in late 1971 [this vehicle has the AMC 258]. The Scout II’s entry level powertrain was the same as its predecessor—the 152-cid slant-four.

The Scout II also continued to offer two major types of roofs: a pickup top and a wagon-like TravelTop, which continued to be the preferred choice among buyers. [This vehicle has both tops, which very few buyers invested in. And even fewer have stayed together]

Besides being an important development in what has come to be seen as the emerging SUV market, the Scout was also a pioneer in the light duty truck market.
