I bought this and a '73 Travelallabout 5-6 years ago from a gentleman in Washington state. He bought them from the original owners widow.
Here's the story.... in 1973,the International dealer in southern Washington got these in brand new, as well as 3 others. He tookall 5 (3 pickups and 2 Travelalls I believe)toMurty Bros. Fabrication shop in Portland Oregon.Murty Bros. isa very well known light and heavy duty truck fab shopthe west coast and have been in business since the 1950's.
They pulled out the brand new 392 V-8 gas motors and auto transmissions and replaced them with brand new Detroit 353 diesel engines and new 5 speed manual transmissions. (the pickup has a 5 speed plus a 3 speed behind it). They didthis with custom engineered motor and transmission mounts and braces.Custom fitthe factory A/C and power steering pumps, new vacuum pump, even an exhaust system with a large muffler that met noise requirements in 1973. All custom fab work is identical between these 2 vehicles. Very professional work!
Both vehicleshavedual fuel tanks, A/C, power brakes, and power steering. They also have matching aftermarket tachs, and controls for engine shut down and emergency engine runaway shut offs.
The pickup has 105,000 miles on it and the Travelall only has 59000 miles.
The pickup was originally a 2 wheel drive but the previous owner was in the process of making it 4x4 when I bought it. I have the divorced transfer case that he gave me, it will be included. Right now it can be driven anywhere, but just has 2 wheel drive.
It has 2 gear shift leversin the cab, one for the 5 speed and one for the 3 speed transmission. You can drive it normally with just the 5 speed, or shift them both if you want to. It starts and runs great, drives good, nice interior, very little to NO rust anywhere. Has original paint that shines up nice. Windshield has a couple cracks. One rear brake drags but comes out of it after a few miles, mostly from just sitting not being used. All gauges work except fuel. All lights work.
I think these are very unique and rare, it probably cost the dealer a fortune to do this swap on brand new vehicles but he was way ahead ofhis time! Reminds me of something Jon Kinzenbaw of Kinze Manufacturing would do back in the day! He loves repowering about anything with a bigger Detroit diesel!
I hate to sell theseand a few other IH pickups I've collected buttime to move on. Click on other items to see the other IH pickups I have for sale.
