1978 GMC Crew Cab Dually
The history I have of this vehicle dates back to the eighties. When my friend Pat used it to drive it back and forth across the country as a sponsored Standup Jet Ski rider for Jet Pilot(he used to throw 2 stand ups in the bed and tow a small 6x10 trailer with parts.) Since then he sold it to my brother in law an ex sponsored Hyperlite rider and it resided in Northern California it’s entire life up until my purchase in 2011 when I shipped it back to Michigan.
Prior to my receipt the truck had been lowered and leveled 360 degrees, given Alcoa aluminum rims, new exhaust system(manifold back,) new A/C compressor(still blows cold,) brakes, had the TH400 transmission rebuilt as well as the 454 motor(rebuild tag on the front of the block.) The truck was generally in great shape, but it wasn’t being used and I loved it from the moment I set eyes on it.
Upon my receipt it had the years of daily use you’d expect from a truck like that and I set myself on a mission to preserve and keep the truck in good running order for the next 33 years.
After driving it for the year or so as-is I started collecting parts to do the necessary bodywork and color change.
Completed in my early custody was the following:New drivers side front fenderNew drivers side dually flareNew rockers/ both sidesShaved: Mirrors, drip rail, body moldings, & stake bed pockets.New door hinges (all 4 doors)New carpet kitDash pad coverWindshields front & rear35% window tint on everything but the front glassRoll on bed liner
At that point it was a good summer driver and it has been in inside storage from Oct-April every year. All bodywork that showed any sign of rust even be it surface was fixed. Slide your creeper under the cab and you’ll see for yourself the immaculate rust free condition.
2015-2016 changes:New radiatorPower steering pump
This year I decided it was time for a newer 3500 so I set forth as a steward of the vehicle to fix everything I can see prior to sale.
2020 changes:New rear shacklesNew rear shocksRebuilt Edelbrock CarburetorNew Edelbrock Torker intake manifoldValve cover gasketNew starterNew alternatorAftermarket Alcoa’s (Seen sold for $1800 alone)Professionally Polished the Alcoa rimsNew Alcoa brand center caps and lug nut coversTires are stock take offs I had from another vehicle with ~75% tread life
I have had this truck as a fair weather summer only vehicle amongst a few others and since my ownership I have put a lot of random work into it. The miles are unknown (odometer shows 11,156, so 111,156 is assumed) with the overall condition of the interior. But since I’ve owned it, I have added ~15k miles. If you have a question please ask. That being stated this is being soldas-is, no warranties expressed, as it is a 42year old truck with idiosyncrasies; squeaks, creeks, & drips. It is a good driver, not a show queen, there are minor scratches and with the matte black paint job it shows a bit of wear/ patina as you’d expect with this style.
Great truck for someone looking at an earlymild customsquare body. Hopefully it finds a happy new home for the next 42 years...
