1957 Ford Fairlane
The Ford Fairlane was produced by the Ford motor company from 1955 through 1969. The original body design was the full-sized Ford body which started out as a family vehicle and slowly evolved into many different available models and body styles. The exterior paint and trim and the options, seemed endless with elaborate cloth woven seat covers and a rainbow of paint combinations. You could virtually have any variety of Fairlane your heart desired. Variety was big in the early days which makes these cars somewhat more difficult to restore but all the more interesting to the collector.
If variety is the spice of life then this car could be put into the category as hot, with a pinch of sweetness. For consignment, a 1957 version of the Ford Fairlane, with a two tone paint job, and some extra spice added to the swoop spear with a pinch of gold accenting above the spear which is in chrome. As for fins we are in the tasteful era, and not yet out of control from the designer's pens. Wrap around front and rear glass, excellent retro interior, and fully lined trunk, and some 15 inch Torque Thrust wheels on all 4 corners we are stylin' and adjusting our greased doo in the chromed rear view mirrors attached to the front fenders, because after all who uses those to actually look for traffic??.... Sheesh!
Exterior
A single headlight on either side with an upper overhanging visor flank a slightly outward V shaped grille in chrome egg crate with the obligatory big bumper below and the Fairlane script in gold in grandma's handwriting style, you are now in 1957 and looking very cool. A white painted hood and uppers for the front fenders and doors gets lost in a sea of burgundy paint below as we move rearward. A swoop spear in chrome with a gold accenting panel delineates the two tones and adds a wonderful highlight to the overall look. On back the rear quarters have some nice fins, with the Ford round taillight, and white topped trunk lid paint. The bottom roll panel is painted more of the burgundy and hanging below is a wide large and in charge bumper with dual exhaust peeking out the bottom. Body panels are straight and show some rust bubbling mostly under the burgundy near the rockers. On the rockers is an ever widening as you move forward stainless trim, and within each wheel well are 15-inch Torque Thrust wheels wrapped by thin whites on all 4 corners. The roof presents in burgundy, and for all window openings are very nice chromed trimmings and surrounds of the wrap around front and rear glass. Keeping it very cool looking, are the dual swept back antenna, and on the front quarter tops, dual rear view chromed round mirrors.
Interior
Within all that greenhouse glass is a mixture of red velour and white vinyl for the door panels and two tone seats. Door panels are just a little wrinkly but have wonderful polished levers and cranks. Inside a spit back bench for the front and a full bench for the rear, all wrapped with white bolsters and red velour inserts with some wide tuck and roll stitching. Material on the seats is looking just fine. Fronting all this seating is the original dash, with a burgundy dash top, and white dash front. The gracefully curved instrument and speedo eyebrow shows the clean and well-preserved gauges within, various controls, an aftermarket vintage look radio and various knobs and pulls. Below the dash is an aftermarket trio of gauges in a stainless shiny panel with white faces. Just below, nice red carpeting is lapping at the seats and thresholds and covers the front and rear passenger compartment. The dash is a wraparound style just like the windshield above, and the headliner is nice and white and nice and tight above. Just a slight bit of wear is seen on some of the chromed plastic surrounds on the dash.
Drivetrain
A lift of the forward hinged clamshell hood and what to our wondering eyes does appear but a shiny blinged out 390ci V8. This has a 4-barrel Holley carburetor atop, and it's covered by a K&N chrome air cleaner housing. Nice cast aluminum M/T valve covers can be seen, and the engine bay is overall very clean. On the back is a C6 3-speed automatic which pushes power back to the rear axle which is a Ford 9-inch with 3.56 gears.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust has been rattle can sprayed black matte, and it is somewhat uneven but still very sound structurally. New floorpans are on this car and rockers underneath have some rust. Independent coil springs for the front suspension and drum brakes for the front wheels, and on the back are leaf springs with more drum brakes. A glasspack exhaust is now on.
Drive-Ability
This newer engine fired right up, and it was off to the Classic Auto Mall test track. Here it performed swimmingly with nice acceleration, and smooth automatic shifting. Cornering was just a bit lumbering but remember we are in 1957 and in a fairly large car so it was as expected. Braking was bias free and strong with not too much foot input required. I did notice a major exhaust leak which will need to be attended to prior to spending a lot of time behind this wheel.
A nice example of 1957 Ford automobilia some visored headlights, a swoop spear in two tone, gold accenting, wrap around glass, and snazzy interior could have been pulled out of the local drive in. A newer 390ci V8 and C6 tranny, and there could be a lot of cruising in your future running around impressing the chicks.
