1953 Ford Customline Sedan
1950 marked the 50th Anniversary of Ford. The Ford Customline became Ford Motors medium priced variant of the passenger car lineup. It featured a wraparound windshield, curved rear glass and the "slab sides" which gave the model a more modern appearance. The Customline was available in 9 different models including two-door, station wagon, convertible, sedan and sedan delivery.
Offered for your viewing pleasure a 1953 Ford four door Customline Sedan. In two tone blues, plenty of chrome trimmings this car has nice overall paint showing a car that has had a good life, and has been well kept.
Exterior
Glacier Blue covers the straight steel panels of this car that have well minded gaps, and an overall slight dullness from age. Some rusting is noted near the fenders and on the lower doors at the jambs. A few battle scars are noted as well but nothing major. From its neatly designed big 1950's front grille with some small bits of corrosion and dulling to the big side trim spear that starts at the headlights and goes to the back of the forward door, then gets picked up again on the back at the fender bump out with an angled ribbed larger panel that turns into a spear off the center and a metal bump out at the top edge of the "wing". This literally looks like you're looking skyward at the underside of a flying jet complete with chrome contrail. Plenty of chrome trimmings for the window surrounds and a single round taillight with a wide chrome bezel and small chromed center rest on the end of the fender which has rounded tops to meet the taillights. Glacier blue wheels with FORD badged chrome caps are wrapped in wide white bias ply tires on all 4 corners. The roof of the car adds a contrasting Sheridan Blue (dark blue) and is bathed in that color.
Interior
The door panels utilize a myriad of materials from smooth tan vinyl to gray stitched broadcloth to low pile gray carpeting and even some taupe painted metal, which all work together to form the door panels. Wide long benches are the passengers seating front and rear, and these are covered with gray broadcloth inserts with salmon colored stripes and salmon covered bolsters. A few stains and dirt marks persist but no tears. A warm tan/gold metal dash, and original instrumentation are seen inside. The horseshoe speedometer and gauge cluster are in front of the original steering wheel in black. Chrome trimmed radio and temp controls are noted on this dash and a centrally located clock in a small circular bump up is in the top dead center of this dash. The original mohair headliner in dark tan, and light tan sun visors are above. Tan carpeting with some soiling and stains is on the floors.
Drivetrain
the 239ci flathead V8 and 3-speed overdrive column mounted shifter provides 110hp. There is a 2-barrel carburetor atop, and a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive on back with a 3.90 geared rear axle. Overall condition of the engine bay can best be described as unrestored and mostly original with some surface rust, and chipping paint and plenty of patina.
Undercarriage
More patina, some slight surface rust on the frame and suspension. The floorpans and rockers are thoroughly covered with undercoating which is nice and black. Independent coil spring suspension for the front and leaf springs for the rear, and drum brakes on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good driver with all functions working. Smooth acceleration and the transmission worked easily with the clutch. A good overall ride.
A great opportunity to own a truly unmolested 50's classic probably restored at one point for the exterior, interior looking good and using many materials. Original engine and engine bay, and a nice aging look which does not have any more need to be redone.
