Vintique Motors is pleased to present this striking 1937 Ford Deluxe Club Cabriolet.
Many credit Henry Ford with inventing the moving assembly line and creating a new way to mass produce automobiles with basic design, styling, and function but it is Henry's son Edsel who receives much of the credit for taking the design and styling of Ford's to the next phase of their automobiles. Edsel was drawn to design and styling over mechanicals and even as president of Ford he struggled to convince his father to accept styling was the future to compete with other auto manufacturers. Edsel took a love of coach-built automobiles and developed the Lincoln Zephyr in which the Ford Model 78 drew its design and styling inspiration from.
1937 was the first year for headlights to be molded into the steel fenders for a custom look which streamlined the styling. There were two models available; one with the 60hp flathead V8 dubbed the model 74 and the other with the 85hp flathead V8 dubbed the model 78. The 74 was offered in only Standard trim with 7 available body styles. The 78 was offered in Standard or Deluxe trim in which there were 7 body styles offered in Standard trim and 12 offered in Deluxe trim. Total 1937 model 74 and model 78 production combined was approximately 921,500 vehicles of which approximately 8,000 were Club Cabriolet's which is less than 1% of production which is consistent with the times as these were intended to attract typical buyers of luxury coach-built vehicles.
This example is a model 78 in Deluxe trim built as a Club Cabriolet which signified it is a 2-door convertible with 4 passenger seating and a trunk. From oral history this example has spent it's entire existence in Michigan. It was extracted from a well-insulated barn on Harsens Island 3 years ago and a picture of its state is included above. It was very rust free and was complete with its original unfrozen 21-stud 85hp flathead V8, 3-speed transmission, and rear-end. It subsequently underwent a complete and comprehensive restoration back to it's original specification and it features all of its original steel body panels. It is finished in correct Washington Blue over a saddle interior with a LeBaron Bonney convertible top and boot cover.
Upon the completion of the restoration it went on the show circuit and subsequently took 1st in class at the 2019 Detroit Autorama as well as won the highly coveted Designer's Choice award in the Pre-War Sporting Cars Around the World: 1920s - 1930s class at the 2019 Eyes on Design invitational. These major awards are a testament to its restoration quality and correctness further setting it apart from the typical Model 78 Deluxe Club Cabriolet. It has not been upgraded with aftermarket hydraulic brakes nor a Columbia 2-speed overdrive typically found on modified cars as the restoration intended to stay as close to original specification as possible. Several original parts were used and those that couldn't be were replaced with original parts that were restored or NOS parts. A mountain of receipts and documentation are included with the sale along with the owner's manual, original service bulletins, and a few pieces of period literature. Truly a jewel of a vintage early Ford that is eligible for further Concours shows as well as judging for a coveted Dearborn Award. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire this outstanding pre-war Ford.
