Description
1989 ascMcLaren limited edition #979 with 69k miles. These cars were special ordered from FoMoCo mainly as black Coupes with GT fronts, T-Top doors, GT exhaust, and omitting interior & trim pieces. Think of these as the COPO of the Foxbody Mustang. People now realize there rarity, and prices are rising. Get your collectible ascMcLaren Mustang now before you cant touch them...This car is one of only 28 red with beige interior built out of the rare 247 built in 1989. In my opinion this car is in great condition for being mostly original after 31yrs. Does show its signs of wear. Car is fully loaded with a $13,000 ascMcLaren pkg (this was as much as the whole LX Mustang cost!) some of that pkg includes; 2 seater roadster convertible option w/ hard cover, bright ascMcLaren Red paint, lower body ground effects, Leather interior, gold wheels, spoiler, lowered suspension, McLaren dash plaque & badging, Pwr steering, tilt/leather steering wheel w/cruise control, tinted glass, pwr locks, drivers' seat pwr lumbar, and Automatic transmission. A/C blows ice cold, heat works great, 100% mechanically sound. Goes straight and rides solid, runs great, shifts perfectly.
Car has aftermarket radio, and Magnaflow cat-back exhaust. Other then that, car is 100% stock
Car does however have some clearcoat issues. Clearcoat peeling in spots in windshield trim, mirrors, back deck, and trunk lid. Car still looks great unnoticed up to a few feet away. Interior shows normal wear due to its age. Car has been well maintained since i owned it, and in the past in my opinion for how it presents itself. Carfax shows a no-damage front impact reported accident back in '94 due to running in a ditch(probably got stuck from being so low). I have looked over car and don't see any signs of repair, and lower radiator support is perfect and undamaged. There is also a milage conflict due to a clerical error when I last registered car. I am in the middle of getting that resolved.
This car is being sold as-is with original ascMcLaren wheels on it. This car has been a dream to own, I am only selling due to buying a new home. Also selling a few other cars as well. I always kept my money in my garage instead of the bank lol.. Car is for sale locally and i have the rite to end auction at any time. Please contact me with any questions before bidding. Thank you and good luck.
A little more history;
Ford Motor Company, with their introduction of the foxbody Mustang with their potent 5.0l V8 engines, solid bodies, excellent handling (for the time), and low price, were moving out of the showroom and on to the streets as fast as Ford could build them. It was natural for custom aftermarket builders and tuners to jump on the bandwagon.
One company also saw Ford's successful musclecar sales and embarked on creating one of the best Fox-bodied conversions ever built, the ASC/McLaren. The car was the brain-child of engineer Peter Muscat. He came up with the idea when his wife, a Ford employee, was not allowed park her Mercedes SL in the parking lot. In '82, he converted a '80 coupe into a 2 seat convertible(first foxbody convertible), complete with a canvas top that folded underneath a hard cover, hiding it completely out sight. After the car was complete, he showed the car to Ford. Because Ford was planning a topless Mustang for the 1983 model year, it was suggested that he talk to the people at Linclon-Mercury. Since the Capri sales had been sliding and was being left out when the Mustang went topless, Mercury was sold on the idea after a version based on the Capri was made.
Muscat contracted American Sunroof Company to build the cars based on his original design. ASC is a subcontractor to many of the worlds auto manufacturers. The manufacturers frequently call upon ASC to create either one-offs or low volume convertibles for lines of cars. ASC brought McLaren onboard to help create the unique automobile, providing spings, shocks, struts, and wheels.
Muscat and ASC designed the convertible to be a 2 seater with a manual top that complete folds under a hard cover like the Mercedes SL line of the day. It was a very distinct difference compared to the Mustang droptop.
With the change to the Mustang body for 1987 ASC/McLaren's sales more than double in '88. The 1989 with Leather seats, wheel and shift knob, ASC only center console, premium sound system, 1" lowering sport springs, and 15x7 McLaren wheels with Gatorbacks, and ground effects package standard on all ASC/McLaren's. The sleek design was a marked contrast from the "boy racer" looks of the Mustang GT.
In 1989, a disagreement between Peter Muscat and ASC over licensing and royalties caused a shortage of cars. After a record breaking year, only 247 cars were produced in '89.
The agreement between Muscat and ASC could not be reached. ASC quietly discontinued the car near the end of the '90 model year.
Final total of production was 2678. This low production amount is the main reason that the ASC/McLaren is nearly unknown, being over shadowed by Other foxbody Mustangs.
